2009 Cutting Bowie

HI Ray, on this one im going to just let time to its job, on yours it will be etched to show the hamon and then polished to bring it our further.

I reshaped the handle a bit, and will do some cutting today.

Hmathews, ive seen the same thing... hidden tangs that were way to small in my view. I generally only neck down at the ricasso about 1/32 to 1/16 then taper gradually to the end of the handle. I also run most of the thong liners through the tang, as this one is done that way.

I would love to find a way to broach out a 1 piece handle for tangs that are this large/deep, just not had alot of success in doing so.

Great looking piece Matt! The amount of swell in the handle for both the palm and at the 'tail' looks especially good to me from practical and aesthetic points of view.
Cheers,
Dave

Wow! I love that bright copper guard! Great contrast with the scale on the blade and the maple.

What did you use to color the maple?

Jason, used chromic trioxide for the maple. Hope to have some more "action" photos today. Changed things up a bit on the handle since these photos.

Chris, thanks, and finally got some very nice ebony to finish up your Damascus fighter.

Nice looking knife there.
What are you using to glue to slabs together?
I need to get around to putting a permanent handle on my cutter and polishing it back up.

Chromic Trioxide...I've not tried the stuff, kinda stayed away from it after Alan Longmire told me it's very toxic, I use Ferric Nitrate instead.

hi all, finally got the edge dialed in, and right were I want it. Whacks through thick walled bamboo with no damage, handles well, snicks through sapplings with disdain.

Couldnt quite get happy with the handle, so tried something different for me. Been wanting to wrap over a standard wood handle, feels great and man talk about grip in your hand. Inletted behind the guard with a 5/32" round file, then thinned out the handle a bit so the cord wouldnt make it too "thick" etc...

Edgar, chromic trioxide is only dangerous if you drink it or maybe get it into a cut etc. Just take proper steps in handling it and youll be fine.

a few more pics-

Hi Matt, looks real nice...
I have sent you a couple of e mails regarding my replacement blade progress...did you see them?

let me know, Thanks!

David Buhrer

I would love to pick that up and see how the cord over wood feels.

That is an awesome knife, Matt. The copper and red wrapping looks like a good combo to me!

BTW - I was passing through Jasper Tuesday... What's with all the Bingo???????

Just finished up my "cutter" for 2009, nothing special but been a while since ive posted here. I try and make at least 1 a year for myself, but im generally talked out of them long before the year is up :D

Any how, this one is 15" overall, 10" x 2" blade of 1095FG (from Aldo), .345 thick at ricasso. Guard is copper, pin/lanyard liner are 416ss, and the handle is some "scrap" Curly Maple I had lying around.

Still in the "tuning" stage, will probably take a bit more off the top line of the handle and top handle/guard radius. Has plenty of contour on the handle for heavy/hard use. Looking forward to getting out to some of the hammer ins/gatherings and cutting with this one-

Hi Matt, just checking in with you for a progress report...... I just tried both of your e mail addy's to see if they are getting through....let me know, thanks!

David

Knife looks great with the wrap. I'm gonna have to try a wrap on some sometime.
I had looked at the write up on the Chromium Trioxide on wikipedia, made it sound scary. *laughs* "It is toxic in contact with skin and if swallowed and very toxic by inhalation."
Then again there are some other things that aren't good to get on skin, but I don't worry about too much *epoxycoughs* I'm just quick to clean hands.

The Ferric Nitrate has a pretty cool look to it, Alan had also introduced me to it, saw it on a tomahawk he'd done and loved the look, so I'd ordered me some rather than trying to hunt down some Nitric Acid to make it.

You ever get around to using that micarta you'd gotten from me? =P
Think I'm gonna make up some batches to take to Tannehill with me.

Tobin- the "bingo" halls are all over hwy 78, they are really more like slot machines and the battle is on in the State Legislature over the issue.... may be some nice buildings for rent soon!

Edgar, ive not used the micarta yet, planned to and still will, but got sidetracked on other knives at this point.

Ive never used Ferric Nitrate, the Chromium Trioxide works pretty darn good and is readily available through Dixie Gun Works.

David, just got and replied to your email.
