2010 ECCKS visit and impressions.

...sent me this breathtaking image of his incredible 'Fixed & folder' knife, that he sold quickly at the ECCKS.

Not only is his knife work extraordinary, so are his camera and editing skillz. He did this composition.

Wonderful!

Coop, with all the breath taking knives you get your hands on, i'm surprised your still alive.. :)

Only a few months ago, I had no folders. Now I have nine. Seems as though some inexorable force means to have me as a folder collector, too.

And now seeing this Fogarizzu, it's almost unbearable. He's put a feast on the plate in front of me (one I can't eat) and it's both a fixed blade AND a folder. WHEN DO THESE MENACING TEMPTATIONS END, LOL??

Glad to point out it won't end.

There's the 'click' of a precision liner lock, the 'snap' of a lockback, and the 'CLACK' of a framelock to overwhelm you. :D

Thanks, Kevin, Roger, Dave, and d762nato.

It was great seeing you there and thanks for the wallpaper books. I appreciate the gesture and after looking through them I realized I have many of the samples that are in them. I'm sure you're the same way I am, you only bring a small portion of the backgrounds you have in your arsenal. I'll probably give them to one of the College's or Universities I lecture at, I'm sure the students will put them to good use.

I was shooting with strobes (flash) at the show. I've been shooting with strobes since I was 14. As an advertising photographer in Detroit in the 80's I was shooting auto's with strobe while many others were still shooting with a continuous light source. And if you think about it, an auto has many of the same characteristics as a knife plus a couple thousand pounds. The transition to knives was actually very easy compared to cars and trucks. I've shot knives with strobes for over a decade but never at a show since they were taking too long to give me the results that I demand, and it requires a few extra cases. I've recently developed a technique that gives me consistent results and the quality of light the same as the continuous light source that you would normally see me use. I won't be using them for all the shows but for a few of them, depends upon the circumstances. Regardless, the knife makers can be assured I will give them the same quality images they are accustomed to.

Just in case you didn't notice I'm using the Hasselblad H2 with a 39 megapixel back and the Epson 2880 printer along with a 28 inch iMac and the MacBook Pro as my back-up computer.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the note. I am pleased you are extending those backgrounds to good use. Excellent!

Yeah, I've always known you to use the Hasselblad and the Mac together. You've got that down.

Shooting cars? Now that deserves some telling. GIANT sets! :D

Thanks again. Looking forward to the show shots drifting in. :)

I am now stating facts not giving compliments:

Without your well balanced lighting, Eric, and without your latest cutting edge
high quality photographic equipment, and with these backed up by many (MANY!)
years of professional commercial photography, I could never have even imagined
to try and put any of my custom knife books together...

Lucky for me, our friend Francesco Pachi in Italy, a commercial photographer
of many years too, has put together a setup similar to yours and can therefore
cover all the photography of European knives for me...

Between you two world class photographers I just sit back and really enjoy
working on my books... T H A N K S!!

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

First off I completely agree on how qualified Eric and Francesco are. Top of the line.

Now, let me make sure the viewers understand that David has not EVER in the past three years once complimented a single photograph I have taken. Not once. He has his preferences and that's OK. I've lived with it.

But to come into a thread that I started and state THE FACTS (according to the Grand Poobah of knife visuals) and continue to omit my contributions to the Custom Knife World while regaling his favorites, is simply rude and classless.

Take it somewhere else.

It makes me sad and sorry that you think as you stated above, Coop.

I needed to use only the best images for best final results,
and I began working with Eric and Francesco long before you
shot your first knife picture
... Only just to put things in the
correct proportion and right perspective...

And, I shall not return your "Grand Poobah" compliment....

All the best,

Glad you enjoyed your first show. :)

Two bigs shows (ECCKS; Arkansas) on the same weekend, both busy, everyone I spoke to that attended either had a great time.

That's what it's all about.

Hey Coop, a much belated thanks (over here on page 2) for a great read and a terrific report on the New York show. You made me feel like I was there with you.

Paul

Coop it always left unstated on this usually "kumbya" forum, but Mr. Darom's work, is not loved by all...or maybe just me...but I am not ignorant of photography or coffee table books or forum marketing. Your work stands on its own and needs no support.
