2010 ECCKS visit and impressions.

Coop, Eric, your BOTH great !
and Tomo if you read this stuff, you too are incredible...

"Opinions VARY". In MY opinion, Mr. Eggly seemed to be pounding his chest in his boast (er post) about his experience.

To me the bottom line is how the end result looks. In seeing photos of knives in the various venues, I think Coops pictures are better then Mr. Egglys much of the time.

I love DDD's books and have them all, but I agree that he uses this forum to promote them "ad nauseum" at times!

And on the topic of using this forum for self promotion, a certain knifemaker ha$ been relentless lately as well.

FWIW that is my opinion!

Peter

A photographer that is an artist strives to express a concept not just provide a true representation. What is difficult in photographing knives is the object is to show someone else's (the knifemaker's) concept.

IMHO Coop's photos show his love of knives and his technical skills allow him to capture this vision. He knows what drives a knife lover's engine. The knife's details and the sum of the detail come through the image. The first shots in this thread epitomize this ability.

Hi guys,

Please, I would like you to steer away from ANY comparison of my work and Eric's. This makes me cringe. We both have style differences and many happy clients. It's like comparing makers: personal preference.

I know you mean well.

Coop

not making a comparison coop, just giving you a compliment. you guys are all different and good.

Hey Coop, I guess this shows the pros and cons of forums. I appreciate anyone who is willing to put up their art form to critique from any source. BTW I wasn't boasting and anyone who knows me also knows I don't have a big ego ( I'm sure someone will blast me for that comment too). As you know all too well Coop before you got into shooting you had asked me many questions about my equipment, backgrounds, lighting and computer software and I was more than willing to share every bit of information I had without hesitation and I'm always willing to share that same information with anyone who asks.

What most people don't know and what Dr. Darom was simply pointing out is that myself and Francesco have been Commercial/Advertising Photographers for over 25 years and we've brought that experience and talent to the knife industry. I know I can't post my commercial website here but most people know how to google. I didn't read anything negative about you Jim but I guess you took it that way. The other thing that prompted me to list a bit of history is because in your original post you made it sound like I had just discovered strobes, which cannot be further from the truth as I have already pointed out.

I guess the lesson here is to simply measure the words we post before hitting the submit button.

Now hopefully we can all shake hands and be friends and appreciate each others talents and contributions to the industry.

Thanks Eric. I appreciate you taking the time to clarify your position.

And, I agree with your helpfulness and contributions. Thank you. Our (my?) world is that much better, learning from ALL the talent that promotes this passion.

Openly recognizing this is important. I do.

Coop

I also thank you for the clarification Mr. Eggly. I admit to taking your post at face value without knowing the history and that WAS my impression.

Mr. Pachi, Coop and Mr. Eggly ALL produce incredible images and as mentioned, personal preferences do form.

"with malice towards none",

Now everyone is happy again!

Even I was honored by being featured in a cartoon, although
I am pictured getting my bones broken in it... :)

All the best,

You guys have ALL influenced me in different ways regarding my collecting. We all work differently and have different personalities. In the end lets stick together and make the world drool over knife photography. Coop was the first photographer to really influence my knife purchasing. My first Don Hanson knife really sold its self, after I saw Coops photo. Now that knife rests in my pocket every day. I also love Erics work and depending on my mood for a certain knife I make the call on where I wanna send it. Sometimes I love to get BOTH photographers impressions of the same peice. DDD has also helped me out with a few things so props to him as well, and for his work on the books. All you guys make knife collecting far more exciting beyond words. I know I have also pissed you guys off a few times, so I learned that communication is key and anything can be straightened out if you make sure your attitute is in line with your words are true feelings. Did that make any sense?

I feel there's a big difference between someone promoting an endevor for which they're passinate and from which we all gain such as David's books and even my promoting of the CKCA here, than someone's self promotion for personel gain.

As far as our knife photographers, they all have their our styles and are all extremely talented and all have in the past and will continue in the future to add huge benefit to the custom knife community.
Where would we be without them? :(

 Agreed. DDD's books are awesome and I GREATLY appreciate what he does. In retrospect, I regret targeting David, as his posts add a LOT to this forum and I doubt personal gain is the driving force. His passion for custom knives is unquestionable....as are his talents in photography and creating books.

Peter

I dont think its ok for someone to constantly take cheap shots at Coop over a long period of time and everyone look past it just because he makes pretty books. sorry

http://www.sharpbycoop.com/ will get my support

Severed (Severed?), you talk about shots that were never ever
fired as I did NOT SPEAK ABOUT COOP at all. Then you go and send me,
on a public Forum, a caricature of braking my bones with a stick.
That could be considered sick...
But I enjoyed your humor, you are a funny person... :)

You say that I am endlessly whoring out myself on this forum...
Actually, I am doing exactly what every knifemaker displaying his knives does,
or every photographer of knives (Eric, Coop and Chuck) are doing when
they post THEIR knife pictures signed loud and clear "Photographed by...".

WE are all promoting our endeavors of love related to custom knives,
sharing our pleasures with other enthusiasts of this art form.

I take being called the "Grand Poobah of knife visuals" by Coop
as a compliment... Why don't you look at the brighter side of things too?

Why not, display some positive energies for a change?

As for my books, send me your shipping address and I may send you one of them.
Maybe (maybe?) you will see the light...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

DDD, unless I am mistaken, you are the only photographer (?your pictures or subcontractors?) who uses the forum to promote sales. The others you mention just show their pictures, they don't sell books, they don't even use the forum to market their services. They are considerably more passive in "marketing" than yourself. I agree with severed, you often shill for your work, more so than the knifemakers, or at least those who don't have their own forum here :)

My sense of decency commits me to simply close this thread. We've covered a lot of ground here.

What started out as a commentary moved to a platform and hasn't come back.

Thanks to all for the dialog.
