2012 Bladeforums Knife - Chatting Thread

You need a minimum buy with any company to do a special run. Multiple scale materials and different blade alloys would not be an option.

One design:
Pattern
Blade alloy
Scale Material.

Anything else and it's like we are asking for different knives. We'd have to meet two or more minimum purchase quantities.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

In my opinion and based on my experience doing the knife last year....if you want a choice of blade steel and handle material, get a custom knife. The BF knife is a production knife that is based on the consensus of the forum. Adding options like this will only increase the price and honestly, I doubt most manufacturers would be willing to do it.

We have not gone with Case because their minimum order is too high for us (500 I believe). Other manufacturers like GEC, Canal Street, etc. are smaller shops and they welcome the business. I don't think it's worth it to Case from a business standpoint to do projects like ours.

It doesn't have to be a Case made knife; there are other companies that make a pattern very similar to Case's Sodbuster.

Thanks for the answers guys.
Actually, I was just wondering about it, this is new to me so from time to time I come out with a new question :D and I'm surely not getting more than one BF knife. I agree that, somehow, it should be "one knife for all" and never to be produced in the same version by GEC or Case or whoever will make it...uniqueness is something I value alot, but since (from what I've seen) there will be many orders for the 2012 knife, I was wondering if there would be a chance for that.

Under 24 hours left before we start the pattern decision poll, although, to be honest with you all, the congress jack was is the runaway winner of the prelims.

I hope we do a few vote threads to narrow it down to the (no more than three) most popular selections. While the Congress Jack seems to be the most popular single pattern, I wonder if it is over 30-35% of all the patterns (seriously) mentioned in that thread, or if it would get more votes than that if put up against say just a Stockman, or any knife with either a Spear or Clip main. I know Wharncliffe/Sheepsfoot main blades are enjoying the spotlight lately, but my guess is at least half of us would prefer that type blade ride in the "shotgun" position.

My .02 is that ultimately no pattern receiving less than 50% of the vote should win. If a pattern can pull 50% up against more than one other option that would be a strong statement, but I would hate to see a pattern most people voted against get the nod.

does that mean you guys want me to illustrate "congress" on the label?:D:cool:
thats gonna be rough man! gonna need more space
thats assuming nobody else wants to take the reigns on doing the art!

I agree with Stu that the final poll should be among very few patterns (two or three) to avoid "spreading" of votes to a larger number of patterns...but of course it's up to the mods.

There were 5 patterns that stood head and shoulders above the rest. If we were to narrow it down from there and try to be fair, we'd really have to narrow it down to the congress jack, since that by far had the most votes. That's no fun. I'm working on the poll now.

Or another way we could choose is let Gene decide which knife he wants to draw the most :)

IIRC early results tend to be pretty accurate when such a large swing is evident, it tends to be like a rollin' snowball and gain more momentum/acceptance by the majority.

Gene, I'm fine with you doin' the artwork, I'm lookin' forward to your interpretations, I just don't wanna see a Whaler on my Congress Jack tube.;)

I'm surprised that the congress, which can be had from most knife producers right this minute, is in the lead for the semi-custom annual knife pattern design. What am I missing here?

Maybe it's true what they say about people who think everybody else is crazy being crazy themselves...

Well, I guess I am. I am crazy about that SOWBELLY!! :D

Actually, it's not a regular Congress...it's a Congress Jack (sheepsfoot and pen on the same end on a Congress handle), which is not a very common pattern actually (there isn't even one in production at the moment actually). As for the sowbelly...well I can't blame you for wanting one :)

Thanks for pointing that out, quattromori. I took a look at my GEC congress and I see that you are correct. It has a sheepsfoot and pen blade at both ends. That lead me to take a look at my GEC sowbelly and I.... Hey, where is my GEC sowbelly??

:D

:D

You mean your GEC #56? Yeah, yeah. call it a dogleg or a serpentine, but it's really a just sowbelly with some junk in the trunk.

At the risk of sounding too political, maybe the popularity of the congress jack reflects the current U.S. uncompromising politicians that can't agree on anything. Instead of a normal congress pattern, where the blades come together in the middle, the congress jack's blades are all far to one side

:D

A philosopher in our midst eh? ;)
