2012 OKCA Thread

I made some progress on this camp/utility blade today. Hopefully have some finished pics by the weekend.

Can't tell too much about it right now but it's a little sneak peak into the handle construction. :)

That's almost rude John! Looks like a 2013 Porche all clad in pads to disguise it's best features out on the test track.

I'm looking forward to seeing it!

I'm really looking forward to the OKCA show - likely the last one I'll be able to attend... I told myself that if I had 5 straight razors and 5 knives ready I would get a table but at the rate things are going I don't think I could have the profile done by then :D School is getting pretty intense and the free time I have goes to my wife & kids. I'll be done with med school in Dec so there's a chance I'll be able to make it to the mini show but not likely.

Anyway, I'm excited for the show - I don't get a lot of chances to talk with other knifemakers and, especially, get to handle their knives. Besides that it's always nice to match a face with a name/handle. It seems like every time I meet a maker I "understand" their knives quite a bit better.

Enough procrastination, back to studying! Keep working on those knives, Boys, gotta have something (besides ridiculous mammoth tusks!) to lust after!

I made some more progress on this one today. Still a ways to go but might get close to finishing this weekend.

I got the clip rough ground tonight. The blade flats are at 400 grit but need to go much higher. The clip has not been hand sanded yet. All the handle parts are made and rough sanded to 220. Everything fits together nice though. Still have some handle bulk to remove around the guard collar.

amcardon I look forward to seeing you there...

John looking good as usual! Has you flair, can you explain a little bit about how you did the Guard/Bolster?

Thanks Ryan. The guard collar is a piece of 1/4" thick mild steel. It's oval in shap and is exactly the height of the ricasso. (Well, actually it's about 8 thousandths taller on top and bottom.) Then I coin edged the whole piece and filed a fuller in the center of the collar all the way around. So just the edges are coined. Kind of looks like 3 pieces but it's all one.

I got this one finished but it won't be going to the show. I have a buyer for it right now. :)

Very nice, love the blacked out look.

I really like that blade John.
Maybe all the BF guys who don't have tables can wear name tags?

Is there any fun planned for Friday or Saturday night?

I finally squeezed one in for the show in between orders. The latest rendition of my Tac Bowie. Sorry for the crappy color, I am still figuring out the white balance on my camera. The micarta is actually more tan, not orange!

Bryan, I am sure we will do something Fri and Sat we will have to make plans as things get closer.

Ben I really like that. Especially the Beefy Jimping. Nice work

nice design Ryan. A sleek, thin handle would suit er nicely.

Thanks Lorien, Got the handle finished up and she is ready for OKCA (Still needs a Sheath)
Any guesses on the wood Combo?

Almost looks like walnut and red-oak... Whatever it is they go together very well and look great on that knife!

Thanks amcardon. I posted another thread with the info so I may as well spoil the fun here. the wood is KOA and Curly Mahogany. You may recognize the mahogany from one of Wheelers amazing knives.

looks awesome.

I have a few teaser shots of what I hope will turn out like I want it.
