So, here we are with some significant progress to report. After looking over all the polls and discussion, we have put together a proposal to submit to manufacturers.

--------------------------------
Pattern: two blade congress jack
Size: 3.5" - 4"
Blades: sheepsfoot primary behind pen secondary; half stops on both blades; main blade as long as possible but no longer than 3"
Blade steel: 1095 carbon
Blade finish: satin; cut swedge on primary blade, drawn swedge on secondary; no etch, no serial numbers
Bolster material: nickel silver
Blade tangs: must accommodate a Bladeforums tang stamp; if current stamp is too large, we would like a smaller one made; "2013" also stamped on tang
Bolster style: square, with rattail (one medium thick groove per bolster)
Cover material & color: thin-grained paper or linen micarta, whitish/ivory colored, curved some to bring out some layers in the micarta
Nail nicks: long pull on primary, standard nick on secondary; both on shield side, placed so blades do not interfere with nicks. Possibly a relief cut inside scale in front of secondary nick to help opening, if needed.
Shield: long, centered, and running parallel to long axis of knife; must be pinned
Springs: extended spring to close secondary blade channel
--------------------------------

Depending on who manufactures it, all of the options listed above may not make it into the final version, but we'll do our best to keep it as close to what everyone discussed as possible.

Our next step is to shop the proposal around to prospective manufacturers. We're going to put a formal version together over the next few days and hopefully have something out by the end of the week. Our next formal communication here will most likely be after we've heard back from makers and have some idea of what they can do and for how much, at which point we can go over our findings.

Again, thanks for all the ideas everyone has contributed. Good things are in store!

I'm sure all your hard work is very much appreciated. Great job team

Wow, thanks for going through all those comments
If most of these features make it into the final knife and the sheepsfoot isn't too obtuse I'll be extremely happy :D

Blaine, thanks for your continued work.

Out of curiosity:

Aren't these two criteria somewhat at cross purposes, or-- if both are kept-- possibly exclusionary?

Ie, is it possible for a 3" primary blade to look "correct" in a 4" handle...?

(Here's where someone posts a picture that shows it can be done well: )

I just had a closer look at my congress whittler.
Closed length: ~3.8''
Blade length: ~2.4'' (from where the blade leaves the frame, not edge length)
3'' would just be about the maximum that could possibly fit in that frame.

So I don't think the 3'' limit would hurt the design.

Thank you for your hard work and effort! This description sounds perfect, exactly what I've been hoping (and voting) for.

Excellent! I couldn't picture it, going by stated lengths alone.

Thanks so much for your prompt, pictorial assistance. :)

Sounds good. We are going to see drawings of this, before the order is finalized? I really like the idea, still not sure about the scales.

Thanks again to the committee and to everybody involved in this process. It's great to imagine my future BF Congress jack :)
As for the blade/handle ratio, being a jackknife (single pivot knife), I tend to think that a 4" frame could actually accomodate a main blade of more than 3". Personally, I'm more inclined towards a shorter frame, and a blade under the 3" length, but I assume that will depend alot on what the factories say. As for every other feature, I'm happy with every single feature described in Blaine's post ;)
