2013 BF Traditional draft proposal

Thanks to everyone involved! This will be my first BF tradtional knife and it looks like a winner. The ivory micarta should look really nice. I'm glad that's the color of choice.

Good question, oh owlie one.

Since we're dealing with a size range, that leaves some room to proportion it correctly. Plus, there is kind of a "standard" size for this pattern, it seems, which is about 3 5/8"-ish. By the time you account for the tang, that gives you no more than a 3" blade.

Blaine, thanks for your continued work.

Out of curiosity:

Aren't these two criteria somewhat at cross purposes, or-- if both are kept-- possibly exclusionary?

Ie, is it possible for a 3" primary blade to look "correct" in a 4" handle...?

(Here's where someone posts a picture that shows it can be done well: )

It sounds nice, I'd like one, especially if its gec. How do we go about getting ours? And will we see pictures before?

Spark will be handling sales through his website, like last year. I don't see why we wouldn't have pictures available beforehand.

Sounds amazing!!! This will be my third forum knife in a row and it looks to be a winner! Thanks to all that are involved in making these great projects come to life.

Your already subscribed to thread, check it periodically and you'll be updated, typically we decide on the final specs, shop it around to see who can do it with our budget then they'll post a commitment thread.

That'll run for awhile once we got our count Kevin will look for payments/deposits and then the wait begins, the long hard wait, the agonizing wait with glimpses of conceptual drawings, sometimes WIPs, packaging development and finally after Kevin gets 'em we anxiously await delivery, followed by months of pictures, stories and regrets the people who missed out.

The question regarding blade length is very valid. The picture of the Congress Whittler is a poor reference, as a Jack will always have a longer main blade than is possible on a Whittler pattern due to the opposing blades. A 4" frame will easily fit a 3.5" main blade. A 3" main blade can fit a 3.5" frame, so by definition the main blade on this years knife must be over 3" to fit the frame size selected.

Nothing looks worse to me than a frame with a short blade.

Other than that I expect this will be an ideal knife and I'm very much looking forward to it.

This sounds great!!!! I am very excited to see how this comes into being again. always a joy to watch the progression

Thanks for all of your hard work getting us this far! I am looking forward to seeing it continue to progress

You're right; getting the proportions correct will be very important. To go to the example that a lot of people have talked about, this custom by Ryuchi Kawamura is 3 5/8" long and has a 2 15/16" main blade:

This is kind of the image I have in my head for the blades and springs.

The congress pattern with a sheepsfoot main sounds extra bulky when closed in the pocket. Of course the "12 trapper is much the same. Guess that's one of the things that happens when we design our own knife. It doesn't sound like my cup of tea, but I'm down for whatever comes.

I thought the same thing about trapper from '12 but after puttin' in my pocket, I've carried everyday since we got 'em.

Sounds great, I'm really looking forward to having a congress jack.
