2013 BF Traditional draft proposal

well, unfortunately i'm going to have to pass on this, i guess i'm not quite at the point where i can drop that kinda dough on a knife. especially one i'd probably be afraid to use.... i'll enjoy looking at all the pictures of it though :D.

Thanks,
Scott

I will take two. Will pay as soon as there is a non US (Canada) order thread posted.

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed that not one other knife manufacturer stepped up to offer an alternative. Queen /Schatt & Morgan, Canal Street have been good for us in the past. They built us very good knives. Were these other companies shown our specs? If so what kind of responses have we gotten?

I too am sorry to hear about the lost knives last year. I do not recall mention of it. I thought that's what our shipping and insurance covered. In this difficult economy we need to TRY to keep the knives closer to the $100 mark. I would like to see us get other bids.

Good points made IMO.

Thanks to our volunteers for all their hard work. Hope the final knife lives up to expectations - Thumbsup (my smarticons don't seem to be working).

I can only echo the above two comments. It is a shame no other companies have been forthcoming as of yet.

I do hope they have been given time to reply.

That said....the specs of the knife are sounding great, and its especially pleasing to read that the blade length is at the three inch mark.

Edit: Clearly I misunderstood the original discussions on blade length! Silly me :-/

I too have to echo the sentiments in this post.
It does look like a nice one, and as I said earlier, I'm still in for one... but it really would be nice to hear from the other cutlers. And that might help the pricing, as well. Going that far above the hundred-dollar-mark isn't going to necessarily prevent me from buying one, but it's going to prevent me from feeling like I got a good deal. :/

Thanks for pulling this together, guys!

For the purposes of planning ahead, etc.:

Last year, GEC released a "Saddle Trapper" roughly one week after the BF knives started to be delivered-- different appointments, but in some cases almost $30 less. This is, of course, GEC's prerogative, and no doubt part of their planning in taking on a "new" pattern. Still: has there been any discussion about this with them, specific to this year's forum knife? Ie, it would be nice to know up-front (and if possible, maybe gain an understanding of the timing, if not a longer gap between the BF release and GEC's).

Also, I'm unclear on the extra charge being applied to this year's knife's cost. Are purchasing members being assessed the extra "handling" charge to provide insurance money for packages that are undeliverable, or as a shared penalty for the inconvenience of resolving address discrepancies?

Looks a good knife either way. :)

though it sounds like a good knife, and I appreciate everyone's efforts in getting this together, people make some good points above, as the price is higher than I expected. The pattern seems (to my non-knife maker eyes) a relatively simple jack, rather than a complicated 4 blade pattern with crinked blades etc, nor is the handle material extremely expensive, like e.g. stag. In fact our original specifications were partly constrained by a price limit of around $100, so more members could afford it.

Thanks for pulling this together, guys!

+1

I hope that everybody who shells out for one is very happy with it.

This (below - with my emphasis) was, I think, sage advice, and made early on:

I have no idea where this fits, but as it is a point of curiosity (and potentially, "hope") I'll put it here

This is another forum's 2012 knife (the "frosting" is mine):
CStForumKnife_zpsf48d29a7.jpg

Some of the specs:
Two clip point blades made with super high quality 14-4 CrMo steel
Genuine American Elk antler handle slabs*
"(Forum)" etch on the mark side of the master blade
Custom raised letter (Forum) nickel silver shield
Exclusive (Forum) Edition - 100 pieces made
Packaged in protective drawstring pouch inside a blue box that sports a custom (Forum) label
Limited lifetime warranty

The main reason I present all this that its final price, including all kinds of forum identifiers/customizations, was (is) $75.

If I recall, last year Canal Street wasn't in a position to produce a forum knife for Bladeforums, and I'm not promoting them as a manufacturer for this year's.

I just like how much they were able to offer, especially for that price. Perhaps there was subsidization involved...? If not, I'd be interested in seeing if they'd be willing to work with us again, or how we can accomplish as much in a similar price range with another manufacturer.

And, while I understand there has been "process" in place here in previous years, I've also gleaned that some processes haven't necessarily been the most efficient (or unfraught!) means of accomplishing a forum knife.

Rather than coming up with a pattern No One will make for us (and/or without significant compromises or an untoward cost), might it not be helpful for the A-Team to determine what options might be possible through talking with known manufacturers, and then voting on those...?

Or at least, maybe we can vote on pattern ideas sooner than later here, maybe down to a top three, and see what's actually viable in the Big World?

Maybe something to think about next year? Seems to me that collectively we have phenomenal buying power, with capable people who are willing to work on the design, do the tube art, etc, as well as members willing to stump up in advance. Anyway, that's my 2 cents/penn'orth. Not intended to be churlish, as I said above, I think our volunteers have done a great job :)

Here's the thing, guys. Maybe this will answer a few questions. Early on in the process, Dave contacted GEC, CSC, and Queen. GEC is the only one who responded. Not only did they respond, but Bill began to immediately put together ideas about what was possible, what they already had, what they could do special, etc. From the polls and discussions, it appears as if people were pretty enthused about the design we came up with, and GEC was able to pretty much offer it all. I suppose if we had gone with more standard options, the price could have been made lower. We also ended up needing a new tang stamp, as well.

I can't speak to what Spark said about delivery costs; I wasn't involved last year, and he hasn't talked to us about anything like that. I should also add that I don't know how much contact, if any, Spark had with the other cutlers.

I think that's fair enough Blaine, you tried, a shame that CSC and Queen couldn't be bothered to respond, let alone match GEC's enthusiasm.

We had the same experience last year. GEC has shown enthusiasm for these projects, they're quick to respond, easy to work with.

Oh, and I'm in for 1.
