2013 Christma/Winter KITH Final Edit of Rules

Must be the picture. It looked like 3/32. Looks like it will be a great slicer.

I'm 99% done. I need to stitch the large knife sheath, but I will do that tomorrow since my eyes are getting old :(. I got bifocals this week, but they don't help the fatigue at the end of a day. I will get the small knife out in the mail tomorrow morning, but I will be delayed 2 days with the large knife as I have two final exams this week on Monday and Tuesday. I will have the large knife in the mail on Wednesday at noon.

Good looking stuff Willie.

Bad news on my side. I lost control of the sewing machine and just cant let the sheath out of my shop. Thought about trying to fix it but it wont look the same. Gonna delay me by a day or so but will be at its destination by end of the week. Was almost done too.

Yeah, I vote that we do this without sheathes next time. Joking of course, but just saying that my sheath is absolute minimum. Almost 4 years of doing this, and while my knifemaking skills have improved dramatically, I'm sorry to say my sheath making skills haven't. I can say that is is a clean looking red kydex lined with yellow felt. I don't see many line their kydex with felt, but it really is a lot more gentle on the blade plus it will hold a little oil and keep the blade protected in that regard. Pics later, after I get the stingray Same rewrapped.

Here is my final entry for the KITH this year.
A couple things I can do better with practice, but overall I am very happy with it.

Americanized Tanto
10½" overall, 5" blade sharpened by Richard J
20 layer 15n20/1084 damascus
Black cord Ito w/ red Same
Kydex blade protector sheath w/ felt lining

This flaw in the wrap has been fixed

I have shipping information on almost all of the knives now. By mid week next week, they should have arrived. If anyone doesn't have theirs by Wednesday next week, let me know and I will track down where they are.

I was held up at work the last few days and was unable to get my entry mailed until this morning. It is scheduled to arrive at its destination on Friday and Warren now has my tracking information.

My apologies for the delay.
Chris

This is why I like the KITHs here on BFC! Mine just showed up, and I was blown away. Having seen the knife that Corey(Quint) showed, I was excited. I open the box and here is this handle, which appears to be bailing twine soaked in epoxy, staring at me. I unwrap it from the paper towel and masking tape and it's an ugly (chopper?) from Corey. Even the obvious hamon on this thing doesn't make it any prettier. I'm going to use the hell out of this knife! Thanks.

Oh, and here's the other thing in the box. It's too pretty to ever be used. Very clean grinds, excellent handle.

Totally forgot to email you about it. So the sheath I messed up a little bit didnt have time to redo it and didnt have time for the other one to have a sheath made.

The chopper thing is actually forged from a section of railroad track. Differential HT and etched pretty strongly. No idea how well it will hold up but ya never know. It is hemp wrapped leather lined soaked in epoxy. Have fun with it.

Hope you get to use the other one as well. It was made to use. Only thing is working on the edge. I left it a tad thick before sharpening which is the only thing I didnt agree with on that blade.

Anyways hope you enjoy. Thanks.

Woohoo, nice blade Zaph. Great job forging the damascus and nicely lined sheath. I only have gotten a couple of kidex sheaths and must say the lining makes a world of difference. Nice smooth feel to it. Handle looks excellent as well, worth the wait on the ray skin.

This is gonna be my truck blade I think, I like to have one tucked between the front driver seat for easy access and that I can just push down between incase I need it to be incognito for whatever reason.

This is also the first blade Ive gotten to play with that has the traditional style wrap on the handle. Thats a very good grip on this guy.

Thanks a bunch and thanks Willie for getting this going.

Glad you like it. Unlined kydex always seems to scrape the blade. I don't understand why people don't line the sheathes. I've remember a thread about "Kydex is harder than 1095" because it kept scratching his knife.

Hey guys, I had a pretty rough week, not related to anything knife making, and seeing these replies put the first smile of the week on my face! I am glad we had an exchange this year. I had fun, and as I said I would do it again next year, assuming you guys will have me (and assuming Stacy doesn't want it back.)

I would like some suggestions as well. I did the different classes to make it less stressful for newer makers to feel OK joining rather than thinking they weren't good enough as the primary reason, and secondly to prevent gold digging which was a concern expressed to me. I don't think that is an issue here at all after seeing the efforts people put in. (I wasn't here in previous years.) I had a few PMs asking if the submissions were good enough. Does anyone have suggestions to make this more welcoming? Maybe a first kith group to get feet wet, then all other submissions? Its not at all about the complexity or skill, as everyone did great, but I want to ease the anxiety with doing something like this. I felt apprehensive that my submissions weren't good enough.

Warren, we all wonder if ours are good enough, that's a good thing. It means we are trying and want to do better. I know at least a half dozen things I would like to have done better or different on the next one, but Corey seems really happy with it, which makes me happy. That's what the KITH is all about. As far as different categories, I'm against it. It really doesn't seem to be in the spirit, no matter how you intend it. Some novices have made excellent knives and I'm sure some journeymen have turned in less than their best. That's no reason to keep either out.

Has anyone else received their knives? I have not received either at this point, but cross border shipping is slower.

I have received mine and it was confirmed to me that my entry arrived at its destination.

Chris
