2015 Gardens

Some great garden's folks ! I moved some stuff around chives are by themselves and the purple basil is upstairs in the window sill.

Your plants are looking so robust! I can see why you have had to move a couple to separate containers. When they are just seedlings, the pot looks so big and empty, doesn't it ... then sun, water and time work their magic.

I see that mystery yellow flowering plant has a nice trailing growth - very appealing, and a bright addition to your garden. My guess is that you will have flowers until killing frost. Thumbs up! (icons are not cooperating with me this morning)

Going to try an experiment. Picked up two tomato plants (half price now) and will plant them in planter boxes individually with store bought soil. I have no room for more tomatoes in my garden, but was hoping to extend the season a bit with these two new plants. My garden plants will likely have pretty much petered out in 30 days. Haven't planted a mater in a pot in years, it will be interesting to see how it does.

Good to see the robin chicks have moved on.

Added: Planted them. Now I'll watch them grow. I like watching things grow.

Yes, to experiments and to watching surprising things grow in awesome ways.

Good grief ... always nature tangles, trails, blossoms, seeds, creeps, explodes ... and otherwise exceeds my expectations. I turn my back and ... whammo!

Honestly, when I get up in the early morning, I can't wait to see what was not there the night before. If you are reading this, you might think that I need an intervention. :D

The wild perennial hill garden is in control of itself.

The bee balm is a colour blast to my eyes ... the hummingbirds love it ... and it is a sun loving invasive that takes over uphill and downhill with prolific seeding. The scent is wonderful, not sweet. Great in winter bouquets.

It can't be only me ... is this a fuzzy muzzle face or what?

Letting the natural milkweed invasives have full rein - happy to, the naturals far outdo (100 to 1) the ones I planted over winter and nurtured. 1st monarch sighting on the milkweed was on Jul 6th. No sign since ... but this year has brought an abundance of milkweed, everywhere. Monarchs won't have difficulty finding them.

You have met night-time insect control toad, "Lumpy" in an earlier post. Well, here is "Slick", daytime snacker and bug enthusiast ... also shy.

Frog and toad both love the water drip feeder that also attracts their snacks ...

Nope. No time for an intervention, I am too busy gardening.

I never knew that flower was called Bee Balm. I have seen it around, mainly back east, but never knew what it was! Thank you for the lesson.

I know the others in your beautiful pictures and everything looks very green and lush.

Thank you for sharing.

Cate
PS: My husband is going help me with some pictures too.

Had to move the Banana pepper plant into it's own container it was blocking the sun. That's it not moving anything else this year I have to carry 2 5 gallon buckets down 2 flights of stairs every other day now.

I never tried this from my phone, hope it works. Anyway I feel like I'm late for the party but I guess better late than never. Some of my strawberries.

Ha. I have to thank my knowledgeable neighbour who provided the bee balm and a lot more mysterious plants as yet unnamed. They come, they grow, they multiply. If I like them, I encourage them. If not ... well I mow them down! Can't say I have been doing a lot of mowing lately, though!

Lugging water! Now, aren't you the dedicated gardener ;) You know, I have never grown peppers. Are they difficult?

Now, that's a berry patch! Honestly, it's just like the one my grandfather used to chase me out of when I was a kid. If that's some of them, how the heck big is your garden? Good stuff ... and by the way, the garden party doesn't end ... and there's no such thing as being late to it :)

Peppers are my favorite thing to grow, but usually chili peppers. Cayennes, habanera, lemon drops, orange thai and Chinese 5 colors all have produced great in containers for me. I've had lessluck with bells.

Hey BenchCo ... nice chattin' maybe more peppers in my next gardening season ..... :D

I think next year I'm going to plant a couple green peppers in containers. My garden is fairly small and the tomatoes tend to shade the peppers out and they get real tall and fall over. I have have used the small tomato cages with them. Doesn't seem to make a lot of difference other than they get even taller.

The two tomato plants are doing well in containers so far. They aren't real big yet, so I can move the containers around if I choose to.

Bee Balm has always been a wild flower for me. That and the Coreopsis (brown eyed susan type flowers) are a great mix together.

I have tomatoes galore now and have for the last couple of weeks. Been harvesting green peppers as well. Been eating a lot of tomato sandwiches lately.

I think I need a bigger garden, But I really don't have the room in a sunny location.

This is my first year growing 'maters as I don't really like tomatoes. Well I guess I don't like store bought tomatoes cuz these are great! Taste completely different. Gave some to my mom and she's been talking about that's how they tasted when she was a kid now that understand what she meant. I also have a problem with them outgrowing their cage and flopping, but I moved them to a corner where a banister supports them and they've produced well. Mine are sweet 100s and huskey-cherry hybrids. Lil'maters. I wanna grow some big fancy ones next year now that a tomato sandwich sounds good as opposed to when i only knew store bought tomatoes.

Tomato sandwiches are something I grew up with during the summer. Love them with ham, even bologna (bolonie) or bacon and a slice of cheese. When you grow your own, being a little wasteful is wonderful.

I believe one of the reasons that home grown tomatoes taste differently from the store bought ones that we are exposed to all winter long is acidity. I believe the FL tomatoes are all low acid tomatoes and hence do not have the classic tomato flavor. I refuse to buy the tasteless store bought ones now. They just end up going to waste.

My tomato cages (5 feet tall concrete wire) make all the difference with tomatoes. But you have to have have room for such things. I actually plan to stick one of my concrete wire cages over the pot bound tomatoes when they get a bit larger. I have a couple larger diameter cages that that I made from the "extra" concrete wire. These will slip over the container nicely. I currently have them in the area of my bird feeders and the birds like to perch on them--safely out of reach from predators.

There are determinate and indeterminate tomatoes. The indeterminate can get very tall where as the determinate tend to stay more compact. I normally grow the indeterminate varieties.

Banana peppers really produce a lot of "fruit" for a given plant. I prefer regular bell peppers, but a mix is good. I believe peppers are considered one of the super foods. Lots of good nutritional content. I consider them to be a tad pricey in stores, but of course the price gradually drops as you move into the local production period for that particular vegie.

They are in a raised (square foot) garden.

I actually thinned them out this year, and planted less of them.

I'm thinking it's a really bad case of blight. But, looking for confirmation, and what I can use to treat them (whatever the cause is).
