2016 Gardens

Daisy thinks the wild garden should be a dog park. If she had an opposable thumb it would be :thumbdn: to the fence. Wild roses, black eyed susan, crown vetch ... and other stuff and critters definitely benefit from it.

Crown vetch holds the hillside, travels underground, is a prolific seeder and very aggressive. I like the way its foliage covers large areas that otherwise would look very bare and scraggly. Bees love it. Even in this wild garden I do have to pull it when it overgrows other plants I like. And, when it hits the flat at the bottom of the hill and tries to go further, I just have to mow it.

The sweetness on the air here in early morning ... milkweed and wild roses in bloom :)

Veg garden is coming along. Under the broken clay pot, the hose quick release attaches to a manifold with 3 buried soaker hoses in this section of the garden. It has been very dry and we have only had two good rainfalls so far.

At the East end of this garden, I just have to overfill the 'water container' and the water spills and ponds around the bases of two rose bushes then fills a little irrigation ditch for the marigolds. I keep this filled - it gravity feeds two salamander drip waterers (to attract insects, toads, frogs)

Scarlet runner pole beans are blooming early but a little slow in climbing up to shade the shop window. They have been watered well ... but my experience has been that nothing sets plants to growing quite like a natural rainfall.

Of all the large tomato plants, Early girl is ahead in setting fruit.

For comparison ... on the left is Beefsteak, little one in the middle is Sweet N Neat. Tall one on right is Carmello with lots of foliage and height.

I have placed some willow lattice under these little guys, just to keep the fruit out of the dirt. Perfect plant for a pot for sure. Producing well.

So sorry you've had such a hit on your garden. Looks like you are in the middle of taking measures - that should do the trick. I haven't had problems with them although there are lots around. I did plant bulbs this spring though and often that's what they are looking for in containers ... time will tell. Good luck.

I have come to the conclusion that night time temps are critical in terms of tomato growth and blossom set. The plants seem to actually like the heat, but they don't develop new tomatoes.

Yes. Night time temps are very important. Also consistent watering. It doesn't really mater your watering amount, just that you do whatever you do consistently. Last, double digging the soil before you plant, though this is valuable for all plants, tomatoes go nuts for a double dug soil beds.

My Peppers are coming in.
Moruga Scorpion, Carolina Reaper, Trinidad Scorpion, Bhut Jolokia, and Fatalii.
Pictures soon ;)

Cukes, San marsano tomatoes, eggplant and peas are doing great. Last year I had 400+ bell peppers and 100 lbs of new potatoes. This year I got skunked on potatoes and only five peppers. Carrots and beets did well earlier. I've got really crappy ancient ocean floor silt for soil. I have to add lots of compost.

Is this one of those upside down plant things? :D

Things are looking good. Everything survived the huge thunderstorm yesterday. Peppers are doing the best I've ever had. Harvested the first Jalapenos and a yellow cayenne to make a sesame salsa.

Just noticed some white peeking out I will leave them alone . French onion soup in my future. :)

Wala Walas smell amazing. I read that they are very sweet. They are sweet and pleasant smelling. Thinking about getting a few for my garden this year.
