an after thought if i might bring up?
most if not all of my buck knives have soft pulls, any thought of asking for a bit more stiffness to the springs on these beauties
thank you,troy

Fair question. I've heard many such comments about the pull on 300 series knives. But you'd have to ask Steve if that is possible and what that would do to the cost.

Could some please explain the merits and issues of pull strength on a knife? I'm a bit lost on this discussion. In the mean time, I will check about strengthening them and if it is an option. Never hurts to ask!

if i may, the merits and issues to me are a spring that being too soft easily closes because of lack of resistance causing a unsafe knife for me to use.
that being said i have a 301 that won't have any pocket time because of such. my 303 has better snap upon closing so it is always in my pocket.
thanks for listening, troy

I'll add that ideally, the blades should "lock" firmly into the full opened position so as not to cause them to close easily when using the knife. Just another way of saying what pholder already mentioned above. Also, a nice firm snap upon closing is always appreciated. Blades that don't fully close on their own and have to be pushed closed are obviously not wanted.

There can be a fine line arriving at those two characteristics because many don't like the blades to be too difficult to open either.

So glad someone brought up pull strength and snap. I think a good compromise would be something akin to the levels on a SAK, moderate pull and perfect snap.
That is a good mark to shoot for, hopefully they can change the strength without changing their tooling.

Using a knife like it is supposed to be used actually forces the blade open.
I've used slipjoints for over 55 years, and have yet to have a blade close on me while using the knife. Never had a slipjoint self open in my pocket, either.
I like the soft pulls of the 301.
Even if my fingers are cold and/or wet I don't have to battle with the knife to open it.

Pull strength is a controversial can of worms:D:eek:
Plenty of discourse on it in this Forum at least, unsurprisingly.
Buck slip joints are perceived to have moderate/tame pulls and little 'snap' when closing them. Mine have all been OK but many others have expressed a different POV.

But there again, many like a light pull;)

Myself I favour firmer pulls but provided the snap on return is good I don't mind, all part of the Walk & Talk:cool:

I'd suggest asking the Buck shop to make the springs a bit firmer than usual and that should please most people.

Looking forward to it enormously

I would assume that anything not standard assembly-line production would be considered "special", and likely would mean more $$. Certainly doesn't hurt to ask about any of it though.
