I see a LOT of the 2018 Buck BF knives for sale by individuals. Are these not being very well received? Quality issues? Design issues?--KV

The ones I've looked at have all been very reasonably priced but I didn't look at all of them.

With 474 knives purchased, it was inevitable that several would be on The Exchange. There will be more to come, I'm sure.

A lot of guys claim they bought extra, so that they could sell it later at cost to other BF members who missed out. Some others say they just didn't like it as much as they expected. Personally, I would have at least waited until all the orders had been shipped out to all the buyers before I started the flipping process.

I don't think it is fair to say these are "flippers." As I understand it, flipping a knife means trying to sell it for a significant profit, whereas all of the sales threads so far have been at cost, slightly above cost, or even slightly below cost. The impression I get is that some folks got different from what they expected and are trying to recuperate the costs. I agree that it would be kind to wait for everyone else to get their knife before selling one's own, but I don't see that as binding rule of etiquette.

I may have missed some outliers, but the sales I saw were asking just enough over original price to break even on fees and shipping. We were allowed to order two, and since natural materials like elk can be a gamble, I imagine some folks ordered two so they could increase their odds of getting one they liked, and sell the spare. Not to mention, they were paid for in July, so by the time it arrived they may want the funds for something else.

We were very concerned about flipping the forum knife. So much so that we limited the quantity, with a few exceptions, to two each. I'm watching, and I'm sure Frank @knarfeng is watching the exchange. I'm hoping we don't see any ridiculous prices on the resale of these knives. I'm not sure what we can do but we will do what we can.
I think r8shell summed it up nicely and that's what we'd hope and expect to see.

It does not appear that the knives sold to this point are being flipped, at least from the prices I have been able to see. That said, there were some early complaints about fit on these.

I purchased two, and do not plan to sell either. One is all right, but the other has some bad back spring gap issues, plus some minor blade play. I have several 110's, and have had a couple of their less expensive slip joints, and none were as poorly assembled as this one. Now if I want to ship it back, I have to pay again. Maybe they would get it right the second time.

Buck knew these were going to knife enthusiasts. I don't think the quality control department got the memo.

Jeff Hubbard posted in the knife thread in the traditional forum responding to specific issues and asking buyers to let them know about any other issues. You can argue QC was an issue, but I don't think it's fair to say they would "maybe" make it right. Buck is being proactive about making sure buyers are satisfied, which is a beautiful way to carry the spirit of the forum knife.

Will someone post the link to Jeff Hubbard's post referenced above?

All,
Thank you for all the feedback good and bad on this offering. Please contact me if you have any issues and we will get them fixed up for you. you can contact me here or jhubbard@buckknives.com or warranty@buckknives.com and we will take care of you.
Each piece of elk starts as a full rack and then the pieces are cut out of that. The 'bow' (concave or convex pieces) you see in some photos is due to the curve of the elk. We make each set out of the same piece of elk, so one side can be concave while the matching piece is convex.

Gaps are making me cringe on some of those.
Walk and talk should break in.

All in all, it seems like this was a good run with minimal issues.

Send it into us. That looks like we snaked the rivet when it got pressed

That black crusty stuff would be the epoxy we used to glue on the scales.

Please keep all the feedback coming. We can't better unless we know where we fail. There are some comments/questions embedded in Gunstockjacks quote, so pop it open..

Thanks,

Jeff

Sorry, didnt mean to infer anything wrong when I mentioned flipping.

My definition of flipping is different than the apparent concensus here; If it's purchased with the intent of re-sale, regardless of price increase, decrease, profit, or loss, IMO its being "flipped".

Largely seems to be people who felt they didn't win on the gamble on what the character of their elk covers would be. I purchased two, and I'm considering selling the nicer one, but I'm going to hold off until after Christmas, because a big chunk of the reason I got these knives was because they were a good bargain and would make great gifts.

Mine is only up for trade because the blades are thicker than I like in a user...so I figured I'd give someone else a chance at it before to takes a trip to the grinder. Otherwise, it's a very nice knife...if I had bought two and one was ground thin I'd definitely be keeping it.

I'd guess it's probably people trying to make a profit on a high demand/limited run knife by getting several and "flipping" them.

A lot of that goes on with forum knives, not just this forum, and almost all SFO/special runs too.

They're not selling for much more than the original purchase price. In at least one case only $4 over the original purchase price. Even then, I think I saw 8 for sale on the exchange.

4$ over of shipped in a small flat rate box is a 3.20$ loss for seller not counting PayPal fees

It's just knife traders trading knives. Nothing unusual there. If you follow the sale threads you can tell when the various knife dealers have shipped a batch of knives that have been preordered.

I got my forum knife today, and it's a gem.

Well there is one listed today on the bay with well over a $100 mark-up. I found in under "Buck 301". I guess it was inevitable....
