So just to be sure I understand this correctly...

The reason a person should not choose ironwood is because it will lose character and turn black over time with use?

Cut to the chase and get beautiful Black right out the gate!
I'm just joking around with this because I am happy with either Blackwood or Ironwood.
It is what it is as far as darkening with use though.

No, just caveat emptor. People who don’t want Blackwood may end up with really dark ironwood. Just know what you are voting for. I like ironwood and I like dark woods as well.
Exactly:thumbsup:

I believe it.
It has been my experience that almost every wood (other than Blackwood or Ebony) will turn dark, almost black with daily use.
Here are 2 85's, bought new, at the same time that were a matching pair. They are Cocobolo. They looked exactly the same before I carried the one for about 3 years straight.

They both look good to me!

it seems to me that if someone wants a black covered knife, then anything will do because almost everything will
oxidize black after use and hand oils, ultraviolet light from sun, or black Sharpie.

just go for ironwood and keep all color options open!

also, you blood wood fanatics peaked too soon- better choose something else as that comet has plunged to earth.

ironwood is quite similar to bloodwood on the janka scale...... like cousins

Absolutely. I agree wholeheartedly with understanding the properties of each option. I really like both blackwood and ironwood as well. And will be happy either way.

Understanding what you're voting against may be equally as important though. A person who only wanted a black wood should now be delighted to know that if they use their ironwood (should it win) they will get what they desire in time.

Which is a win/win for me :D

Truth be told, I really like most of the options available, and think both leading woods (at this moment) are top notch, and deserve to be in the lead.

After much consideration, I've decided to root for ironwood simply because I have never owned any. This is mostly due to my preference for jigged bone, or just not liking the pattern it's offered on, or being too nervous to buy site unseen.

Since enough has been determined about this forum knife (for some time now) to know for sure I'm getting one, I figure this is the best time for me to hope for desert ironwood. I have no other choices to distract me, and I'm fully aware that mine may get less hearts on Instagram than others.:)

:D:D

You shills for Black Wood have some perverse logic;) not surprising I suppose:p This prissy chant about the 'dangers' of choosing any other wood: it splits, won't polish, it's far too variable so hundreds will be bitterly disappointed with their knife (aka they've never seen any type of wood before other than Black Wood:rolleyes:) too many variations and risks....:(

Isn't a MAJOR attraction of wood that it has very individual characteristics, whorls, grains, stripes colours etc? Apparently not as Black Wood is deemed homogenous, safe, predictable, cried up to the roof because of its innate, inert blandness:D I'll tell you what, why not opt for Black Valox or Delrin for this one just to be on the 'safe' side??:D That's nice and homogenous, everybody will get the same knife, there'll be no envying somebody for having something better, no bitter regrets:rolleyes:

Another point, most Modern Knives favour black, not wood its true... well why not opt for a black blade too??;) Then there'll be no danger of variations in crocus polish or matte for people to get disappointed with...or envying somebody's superior patina-or fingerprints:thumbsup::cool:

LOVE IT

Those who vote for black woods should have voted for black micarta to be on the safe side. Less risk. But you might have a spectacular iron wooded killer grained knife!

Ebony and African Black Wood are known to internally combust. May catch a fire in your pocket or burn your hand in use. Use at your own risk.

Also, known to carry beetles that will eat your house.

Which ever of all the options win, when I eventually carry this years Blade Forums traditional
knife, I will try to remember all of the constructive thoughts and good humor put into making it
even more of a highly valued knife.

But they wouldn't because Black Micarta is cool and shows character....;):D
