Levine's 4th Edition suggests that the 29 pattern is actually a Three-Spring Cattle Knife: "An uncommon version of the cattle knife is the three-spring, with a separate spring for each blade. Most of these are swell-center serpentine 'eurekas.' Three-spring cattle knives, especially junior-sized ones, are sometimes mis-named as 'three-spring whittlers,’ a contradiction in terms." (Levine defines "Whittler" as a three-blade pen knife with a large blade in one end, and two small cutting blades in the other end -- and having two springs).

One of the examples of a Three-Spring Cattle Knife provided by Levine is a swell-center serpentine with a punch:

For comparison: a standard 29 next to the Maher & Grosh version, and below, a Black Box Winchester 3904:

Nice knives!

In my opinion, this knife would be perfect for constant use. Great blade config and perfect size for the pocket. Wouldn't be a safe queen for me.

Couldn’t agree with you more, Greg. In many ways, I think the 29 is just about the ideal pocket knife.
