Another year has begun and it is my baby brother's birthday, and so it is time for another memorial Scout Knife Giveaway. The first few times I did this Giveaway I did it on the anniversary of my brother's death, but a few years ago I shifted the Giveaway to his birthday.

Sadly I learned as I was getting ready to put this post together that the original inspiration for this GAW, Charlie Mike, has suddenly passed (https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/rip-charlie-mike.1636471/). This GAW is not a Charlie Mike memorial GAW, but I hope that continuing the giving that he inspired can help make his memory be for a blessing.

Background About My Brother

On May 14th, 2014, my baby brother died in a car accident. He was 13 years younger than me, but we were very close. When he was a baby we shared a room, and so I woke with him and fed him and changed him as an infant (which led my dad to mistakenly claim that August slept through the night from the beginning at one point). For a good chunk of his early childhood it was just him, me, and my dad, so my brother had a hard time understanding that he did not have two dads. As he got older that changed, but the semi-parental character always stayed a part of our relationship. After I moved out he moved across the country to live with his mom, who he stayed with for the most part until his death. Nonetheless, he always made sure to call me at least a couple times a month until he died. He was very good about keeping in touch. Much better than I am.

He did not have an easy go of it in life, and as he got on into his teenage years he had a lot of trouble with drugs and alcohol. He had a series of stints in rehab and a school for troubled teens. After high school he continued the same trajectory, and though he enrolled in a community college he was not able to keep clean and quickly dropped out. After dropping out of college he finally seemed to get serious about his recovery. After another stint in rehab he started going to Narcotics Anonymous meetings regularly.

After years of expecting to hear that my brother had died of an overdose, he suddenly seemed to be back. His speech was clear, he was happy, he went back to school and was doing better this time. He held down a job and was active in the recovery community. He was optimistic and doing well, and I stopped expecting bad news. As it turned out he stayed clean for the rest of his life.

Four years ago my daughter was born, and my brother was thrilled to be an uncle. My wife and I made plans to fly him out with her brothers so all the uncles could meet Abby together.

A month after my daughter was born, late at night, he gave a friend a ride home, and then on his own way home, lost control of his car (driving way too fast) and wrapped his car around a telephone pole. His system was clean, he wasn't drunk or high, he was just driving recklessly (much as I had done at his age). He was 20 years old.

Though his car was just ten feet off the side of the road, near a housing development, it was more than four hours before anyone stopped to check on his car. In my brother's case it probably wouldn't have made a difference if he had crashed next to an emergency room, but we'll never know for sure. I include this detail just as a reminder that we are all in this together, and you can save lives just by stopping to check. I've saved a few folks over the years by checking on wrecks, and I've known other people who were saved by a passerby stopping. It doesn't take any special knowledge or skill to call 911 for a person in trouble, but you could save their life.

But on to the giveaway.

After my brother passed, his mother sent some of his things to me that had special sentimental value. When my brother was little he was very impressed by my sword collection, so when he turned 13 I bought him a replica saber. His mother sent his sword back to me, along with his babyhood favorite stuffed Barney for my daughter, and for my father she sent my brother's knife. My brother's knife was my dad's old Camillus Boy Scout Knife, and it was in turn my brother's adventure knife. Though my brother was not a Boy Scout, that old Boy Scout knife was special to him.

I wanted to be able to share that, or to help someone else share it. So my idea is to send a Boy Scout Knife out to someone to give to a youngster for their first knife. So I'm asking you to nominate someone else who you will give the knife to, but this year you can also enter for yourself (so that more people will participate).

Unfortunately, Camillus went bankrupt a while back, and even the new Camillus doesn't make an official Boy Scout Knife. In the past I have given away official BSA licensed scout knives, but I could not find an appropriate one for a kids first knife this year (Scoutstuff doesn't carry them anymore, and the only NIB true BSA Scout Knives I could find were expensive limited edition models from years past). So this year the child's knife portion of the GAW will be a Boker Magnum in ebony. I am quite impressed with the quality. There is no BSA medallion, but the knives are very well done (at least the one I opened to inspect).

This year's kids knife offering.

In order to encourage more participation, a couple years ago I started offering another knife that people could try to win for themselves. This year's adult knife offering is due to a pretty amazing bit of generosity from W. R. Case and Sons. last year. WR Case and Sons Cutlery was told about my giveaway, and they reached out to me to offer to give me some Boy Scouts of America Case knives!:eek::eek:

I was absolutely floored. Case sent me 4 Red Bone BSA Half Whittlers. I gave one away last year in my memorial GAW. I gave one to my dad when he came to visit for the Super Bowl (Football was always something that we all enjoyed watching together, and the timing was perfect for this giveaway). I gave one to August's mom. That leaves one, and that will be the one I give away this year. I wanted to be very mindful about honoring the generosity that Case showed in sending me those gifts.

In years past I have said that I would have liked to give away Case scout knives, but couldn't afford it. Case made it possible for me to do it two years in a row. :)

The knife in this picture is not the knife you will receive, the knife you will receive is still in the original unopened package with the shrink wrapped plastic around the tin.

The prizes (there are actually multiples of the kids prize, I usually give away a few during this process, though I don't publicize all the ones I give away)

Rules for this year:
  • Open to everyone
  • You can enter one time for yourself
  • You can enter a second time on behalf of someone else, preferably a child that you will give the knife to (make sure it is someone that you can give the knife to without any problems), or someone working hard at their recovery.
  • I will send the knife to anywhere in the US and Canada
  • your entry will be your post in which you say "I'm in" AND tell me who you will give the knife to (whether to yourself or to someone you are nominating)
  • You don't have to tell me why you are nominating someone, but I would appreciate it if you did
  • Don't enter if there is some reason that it would be legally problematic for you to enter

Note:

I was inspired by a @Charlie Mike giveaway a few years back, when he gave away a knife as a mitzvah following the passing of a friend and fellow recoverer. Since my brother was also in recovery when he passed I thought it was an extra fitting mitzvah. As I was nearing the anniversary of my brother's death, I thought this would be a fitting way to help make his memory be for a blessing. When I do this giveaway I like to mention the history of the tradition.

It is a sad and fitting note to this year's GAW that Charlie Mike has left us far too early after he too managed to stay sober for the rest of his life. He had just passed his five year sober mark. May his memory be for a blessing.

*********** Update **************

There is a new prize! Once again @willintheweeds has shown why this forum is such a wonderful place with his generosity. Willintheweeds very generously donated a Bear and Son Cub Scout knife to the giveaway. Bear and Son had the contract for these knives for only a year or so after Camillus, and before production moved to China. So this is an opportunity to win a Made in the USA Cub Scout Knife!

I’m not in since you were generous enough to do a couple knives last year when I nominated a young kid who had recently lost his Dad (who was a Boy Scout). Great to see this GAW come back another year to honor your brother!! I highly encourage others to enter or nominate someone:thumbsup:

Fitting tribute to both your Brother and @Charlie Mike. I was fortunate enough to give two older scout knives away to a forum members children last year at the Oregon knife show which is held in April. I still have a couple more that I picked up along my travels that I will take to Oregon this spring so I will not enter your contest this time around BUT I wish to say Thank You for your generosity and your feelings toward another person that just so happens to be in recovery..... a disease that touches all of us

Hi, I want to thank you for what youre doing. This is really a great thing. Im in, because I would like to give the scout knife to my nephew. His name is Trowa, hes about to turn 9 and wants to join the boy scouts but his parents dont have the money. They are big into video games and so the kid is always inside. So, when his cool uncle (me, of course lol) gets him for a while, he comes and helps me on my trapline or we go fishing with me and his aunt Jackie (my wife can outfish us every time, shes my idea of the perfect woman lol) or calling in foxes to watch. He wants to go hunting soon. Id like to take him but its up to his parents (he has been very responsible on our adventures thus far, even helping me with small knife tasks). I hope that if I win, I can give Trowa (aka TK) this scout knife and give the kid some adventure in his childhood. Kids should be outside having fun, whittling sticks and shooting slingshots and getting muddy, not sitting inside all day. I hope it will keep him out of trouble and teach responsiblity. If I win, we will use our new GAW knives to explore the woods, streams, marshes and fields. Again, thanks for what youre doing, and Im sorry for your loss. Your brother would be glad youre doing this I think, its a nice way to commemorate him.
P.S. Im in, for me. I would also like to enter once for myself. That Case is cool! Thanks again for the chance.

What great support and loyalty you showed to your brother, through all his ups and downs. And a fitting tribute in his name.

This is not an entry, just a thumbs up to your GAW!

Generous giveaway as always, and I'm definitely sad to hear about Charlie Mike I didn't know him personally but he seemed like a great guy here on the forum.

I will not be entering this giveaway because I was a winner last time , and that Case 6208 is one of my favorite slipjoints period.

Here it is as I got it early last year.

And here it is as I carried it for Christmas a few weeks ago, I'm pretty sure I've carried it more than any other knife last year.

Great GAW. I had a younger brother too whom I fed and changed. He is gone, and I miss him.

The first entry is for my daughter. My five sons are all adults. Four of them attained the rank of Eagle Scout, one made Life (the rank just below Eagle). I think only two of them carry knives now, and they prefer modern one-handers. I did give a Case stockman to one of them last year, and I think he carries it sometimes, but he is not a traditional knife enthusiast. My youngest son bought an Italian stiletto when carrying switchblades became legal recently in Texas, but he doesn't carry it.

Anyway, my daughter is 15, and is in the American Heritage Girls (AHG), a scouting type organization. My wife is a leader, and they go camping, earn merit badges, advance in rank, etc. I have converted my daughter into a traditional knife enthusiast. She would love that Boker.

It always makes me glad to see you post that knife :)

My friend, I am always sorry to read about your Brother, I can relate to your loss more than most know!
Your doing a great thing, not an entry- but a Thank you :)
Always sad when others can relate. I just remind myself that getting to know and love my little brother was worth more than the pain his loss brought.

Thank you.

Such a great thing to do and an amazing tribute. Not an entry but a sincere Thank You:thumbsup:
Thanks :)

I love seeing the scratches on those bolsters man! Nothing makes me feel more like the knife went to the right place than seeing that it is getting used.

Not an entry, but kudos for the gesture! Let me celebrate your brother's life in a small way.
He was clean and sober to the end! And he had a great older brother!!
That is no small thing. It was great seeing him get back to living his life.

I'm not in but thank you for this in memory of your brother. I'm sorry for your loss.
Thank you.

Thank you all for the kind words, but none of you entered! I mean, a couple of you won before so you're off the hook, but the rest of you guys, tsk tsk ;)

Well done to your boys for the achievements! That is quite impressive. I am glad to hear that your daughter at least embraces the traditional knives, and I am glad you entered on her behalf :).
Thanks for entering, you'll be 2k and 3a.

Since this is for others, I would like to be in please. One of my closest pals has a little boy who just turned 7 on Tuesday and this would be for them.

It sounds like you were a good brother and I'm really sorry for your loss. Thank you for this GAW.

Not only does the knife just do it for me as a knife, it is also special to me because of where it came from.
Because of the story / reasoning behind your giveaway and the fact the Case learned of this and donated some knives for you to giveaway.
This knife is here to stay no matter what.

Thank you for entering, you are 3k.

I always am a bit sad when you hold this GWA that a young man could come through such struggles then lose his life. You are a great big brother and a great man.
Thank you Randy.

The odds are good for everyone who has entered so far. 3 to 1 odds for everyone so far.
