2019 Price Increase?

You know, it’s not that a couple bucks more every year bothers me. My rent goes up, my cable bill goes up..everything inflates. What I can’t stand are these distributors all doing the LAST CHANCE! garbage. You already have that inventory!!! So you’re the ones who hike up prices with inventory that’s already bought and paid for and pass the increase right along to us out of *poof* “thin f_(&’n air”

Agreed 100%.

Well, I'd expect substantial price increases for knives made in China because of the tariffs imposed on those products by the Trump administration but there shouldn't be more than"normal" COG (cost of goods) increases on those made in the USA. We'll see . . .

there is no "normal" increase. Spyderco prices did not increase prior to 2016 for years. What was initially a response to Amazon became an opportunity to squeeze the market from the top. The natural response is to boycott until fairness is reintroduced.

I've been buying Spyderco since 2005. Only after 2014 or so did prices start regularly increasing it seems. Maybe I'm wrong but I seem to remember years of the same prices. Not saying they don't need to do it, just saying I don't like it.

Prices on several models have jumped significantly on the major dealer sites...a basic PM2 is now like $140!

Yeah I ordered the S110V version right at the end of last year, and when I was price shopping, I noticed Knifecenter and BladeHQ had it for $155. It's now jumped to $172.25 at both sites.

Almost $20?
Ouch.

That’s about 10% increase. Wow not cool . Can you imagine how much more it would’ve been if these companies did get those nice tax cut .

What I'd like to know is why Spyderco and Benchmade "have to" increase their prices, while so many others don't?

Hi Smaug,

Most companies end up with increased costs for one reason or another. They have a choice; they can increase costs or lower quality. Buck used to be made from 440C. Price went up and they lowered the steel. some companies outsource to China for cheaper parts. Some companies go out of business. Money in less money out and hope you have enough to run a business.

I agree ... businesses have to profit ... and you as a consumer choose where to spend your money ...

for years I've heard what a great value Spyderco knives are ... but now they need to raise prices some because their steel costs and expenses went up and now they are criminal over charging?

Almost all knives are going up ... some at different rates ... but buy them or don't ... it's your right ... but why go from what a great brand to now you won't pay an extra $10.00 or $20.00 for a quality knife?

Really? it is what it is ... like 91bravo said no need to cry over it ... it's life.

It's not crying. We're bitter because we feel like it's greed, being pitched as rising costs.

The marketing at year's end that goes: "better buy now, before the price increase!" also is irritating.

We WANT to support these companies, but they're making it harder to do.

I just bought a Manix2. $95. Last week, it was $90. That's over a 5% hike. It's a U.S.-made model, so I don't think the steel tariff had anything to do with it either. You're telling me it costs 5% more to make in 2019 compared to 2018?

No, it's just supply & demand. They'll keep raising the prices until demand goes down.

Makes me feel like we're just dollar signs to Spyderco.

Cold Steel seems to be doing OK, price-wise. Only charges more when the steel gets better. Too bad the taste in knives outta not as good...

And yes, I DID buy the Manix2 at the higher price, but it will be the last Spyderco I buy (at least new) for a while. Probably a couple years.

So many others have been really overcharging all these years.

Err, so many of those others have already been cheaper than Spydie and Benchmade all these years, so I don't think that's the case. Kershaw Natrix, 8Cr13MoV steel, G10 handle scales, China made, $30. Spyderco Tenacious, 8Cr13MoV steel, G10 handle scales, China made, $50. Even if you get the Natrix with carbon fiber overlays it still runs less than a Tenacious...

Hi Smaug,

So what you are saying is that you don't trust us and think we're lying. That's too bad. We try very hard to be consistent and transparent to earn your trust. I guess in your case we have not been successful?

The entire "business chain" from; raw materials, invention, design, manufacturing, marketing, selling, distributing, shipping, warrantees, insurance, credit, etc. ALL EXISTS to service the ELU (End Line User). Remove the ELU from the equation and the entire business chain falls like a house of cards. We all work for you!

The goal in life is to: “Be consistent like the sun and transparent like the air”. That's how trust if created.

Damn Smaug, Sal HIMSELF answered your very question right above AND below your last post, but you choose not to believe it, saying it's "greed, being pitched as rising costs". You asked a real question and got a real answer from the man himself. I don't know what to tell you after that, but it still looks like crying to me. Simple, cost too much, don't buy. I'd love to have a Ducati racebike, but I'm not going to whine, complain and make up excuses as to why I can't buy it.

Sal, Smaug does not speak for the rest of us. You’ve been successful and then some at being an active and fundamental pillar of this community and hobby. Your transparency honesty and diligence are a very significant part of that. Everyone, but for a few outliers is able to see and appreciate that.

Not many owners of knife companies will interact with their customers. I understand how business and manufacturing works and costs, so I really appreciate Sal giving us the transparency that he does. Spyderco has their own forum and Sal is pretty active over there.

Thanks Spyderco, for some of the most innovative knife technology out there!

I don’t fault Spyderco for raising their prices if they feel it is necessary but it does affect the value equation. We only have so much disposable income.
