As to the cost of the knife, I wouldn't mind a five dollar add-on for Spark to use for Blade Forums administrative cost. So, cost of knife + shipping + $5.00 for Blade Forums. For a 400-knife order, that would be 2-grand for Spark.

Lastly, if we're to have a single blade knife, let's have one with a fully functional blade such as a spear blade with a flat grind with swedge rather than a semi-functional blade such as a sheepfoot blade with a saber grind.

I think of it as a physical representation of my participation on this subforum. If I was limiting my purchases to knives I wanted/needed based on my desires ahead of time I wouldn't really ever need to buy another knife. I already own every knife I could imagine ever needing unless some of them are lost, damaged, or stolen. But I still enjoy getting new knives from time to time. And I don't keep any that I don't feel an emotional connection to. The participation in the process is worth more to me than the knife.

Why do you buy knives? What is the logic? Do you need more knives? Different people have different motivations. I don't know what yours are. Mine are primarily sentimental.
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I've tended to buy knives a bit on impulse. My collection is pretty small, but there are still several I would prefer I didn't buy at all. I'm still very much learning what I like, which seems to shift quite frequently, so I suppose it's natural that I don't like or need everything I have.

I understand that people buy and/or collect for different reasons. I'm trying to change my habits to force myself to justify the things I want before I buy them, because I always have a list of other things I want. So I was just curious for what reasons people would consider this knife it they knew it didn't appeal to them. No offense meant, just semi self-reflection in this.

I don't understand why people would buy a knife that fails to tick many personal boxes either, simply because it is a Forum Knife? There have to be lines, principles otherwise we might as well end up with a non Traditional just because it's a 'winner' and is a Forum Knife :D

Not that the GEC is that of course. It may allow lots of people to 'access' a GEC at a low price and or big availability but that sets off another darker aspect. It might be a Flipper's Paradise too given the feeding frenzy that can surround some of their releases ;) But, that doesn't matter provided people get a knife they really like:thumbsup: I doubt if I'll buy one this year due to the useless (my opinion but it's good:D) blade and grind on that frame, but we'll see. Last year's FK wasn't to everyones' taste (has there ever been one? No) but I really like the one I got and carry it frequently, can't and shouldn't win 'em all:cool:

Modoc ED Modoc ED Ed, there is not going to be any other blade than the Sheepfoot/Sabre the style of blade has been decided before any polls, there is not going to be a vote on the blade type more's the pity! The voting will be scale material, type and numbers of bolsters, shield. See Frank's preamble, it's there clearly. People who vote for the GEC are getting a Sheepfoot/Sabre not Spear/Clip/Drop-Point flat hollow grind etc. It's the Chopper!:(

Imagine my dilemma. When my knife needs sharpened, I just go open a new box. It's awful. Buck is down the road, and often I'll have them sharpen my knives for me. But, if I'm in a pinch or a weird mood, I just go to the stock shelves and grab a new knife...I need help.

This is literally what is within arms reach at my work station.....

Yes, I know all that and understand it. I was just wishing for a useful forum knife.;)

No it's not!!! That's my opinion and my wish.

Here's another one of my opinions. A sheepfoot blade with a saber grind is semi-useless. True or not that's my opinion.

It wouldn’t be my first choice either, but I appreciate “different”. If we end up going that direction, I’ll probably use it as a carving/whittling knife.

Buying the forum knife is more of a tradition for me. People may think it crazy that I have not used any of my forum knives, they are all mint, except an extra of last years' Buck offering that I have been enjoying carrying. I have a lot of admiration for Ted, who also has the full set, but I believe has put all of them to use.

I have so many more knives than I could ever carry, so collecting this "set" is like adding to the history. In some years, the purchase of the forum knife I feel has actually helped the business standing of the manufacturer, so that is a plus. I can't say how the dealers make out, but I would assume they get some kind of residual bump in sales (possibly) from the publicity of their hard work.

But mainly it is just for the camaraderie, the being part of the "Porch", the endless threads and polls, the talking about what you like and don't like about the knife, but it always has that great BladeForums tang stamp no matter what!

Wow! What you have written are all my words that were rattling around in my head. You are right on! You put them together perfectly. I hang out here because its fun.
You asked “Why do you buy knives?”. You said mainly for sentimental reasons. Heck - no one could accurately say why people do what they do.
I am in my 80s now, and I could say I collect a few pocket knives because it is better than spending my money on lap dances. But I won’t say that because I have a better reason. I have always appreciated fine workmanship in machines. Machines that are used as everyday tools, that perform a function. A tool that is attractive and is extremely utilitarian. I am attracted to blingy objects.
Earlier in this forum I campaigned for the #86 over the 192. My jibes at the 192 were perhaps not well spoken. My choice was simply on the basis of functionality. An #86 can be EDCed anywhere but airports - The 192 strapped to your belt is not well accepted by our society.
My father made a fixed blade knife from a file back in the 40s. He made a sheath for it and used it while harvesting illegal venison in the UP of Michigan, where I grew up. I used it once in 65 years to field dress a whitetail. I gave it to my son. I don’t know what the hell he’ll do with it.

I know this is the traditionals forum so I will be tactful with my next comments.

There is a relatively well known modern manufacturer of high end folders. They are known for being overbuilt and notorious for having absurdly thick blades. There is a common sentiment that these knives are relatively useless for cutting. However, a forum member plunked down a large chunk of change, bought one their knives, and proceeded to demonstrate to us folks here on BladeForums that it does indeed cut and cuts just fine, it may not be as efficient of a slicer as a kitchen knife or the thinnest of slipjoints, but it cuts and therefore is not useless.

Any knife that has a good edge and can cut is worth more than not having a knife at all or having one that simply doesn't have an edge.

I think folks here would be surprised to find that a saber ground GEC blade is going to cut just fine and will likely even be more desirable as a knife that can be subjected to harder use.

Mind you I haven't said I wouldn't get one I just won't be happy with it but for the "camaraderie" as you said, I will get one.

What are those weird holes in the blades on some of your knives? ;)

Glad to see this poll started, thanks to everyone for pulling this together and early too. :)

Like always, I’m in, can’t possibly stop now. Hell if I start my change jar now, I’ll have most of it by the time all the decisions are made. ;)

13, (ooh my lucky #)so far, I need to do a full 13th anniversary pic with the whole family in it.

I had to go with the Vanguard. I’ve been pushin’ for a fixed blade as long as I can remember. Every year we get more support so until it’s out of the running my vote is the Vanguard.

In the event the FB loses, my second choice will be ......

Yea, that’s not gonna be as easy a choice as I thought it might be. I’ll have to hold my second choice in reserve till the fate of the Buck is determinined.

Any heads up in price delivered, approximately?

i like the idea of giving forum 5 bucks per knife as an admin fee.

i love the saber grind 86 plan that is in motion

I think I recall seeing Steve state that given the $100 "guidelines", should the Buck get chosen, that price benchmark gives us a lot of room for feature and material choices. Considering the $51 price difference between what we paid last year and what the MSRP was going to be for the 301, I'd say we would get a very nice Buck for around $100 or less.
