2020 GEC #23 Trapper Thread

Will the SFOs be available from online retail places like GP and Knivesshipfree or did you have to order them ahead of time? I'd really like to get one of the single bladed ones (blue camel bone or mesquite), but no one seems to have them available yet.

You have to pre order from the specific dealer. CK ordered the mesquite but the pre order is now closed so you'll have to keep checking and hope they have a few left over.
Maybe someone with more experience will chime in and give you some tips I'm not aware of.

CK is Collectors Knives.
Yeah, it's a gamble to pre order sight unseen but I think you can cancel but it's frowned upon and will get you black balled from the pre order list with some dealers.
Not all that risky tho because you can usually sell it at no loss or even a profit on the secondary market.
Like I said earlier I dont have a ton of experience with these so take what I say with a grain of salt.

When GEC announces a new model, distributors will send out notices to those folks that have registered with them, and asked to receive notifications. The distributor will generally decide how many he wants to get from GEC, then he starts accepting "reserves" from those customers. When he gets as many "reserves" as he can cover, he closes the reserves off. Then, when the knives start dropping (arriving), he sends out messages for the reserve customers to send in their money. At this time, there are almost invariably some who do not pay for their reserved knife, so the dealer is left to try to sell it "normally".
So, it never hurts to keep checking back with dealers once the initial drop has happened... a courteous request to be notified if there are any "extras" helps.

Go to the GEC website...
Look at the "Production Schedule" and the "What's Happening" pages.
Those will give you a pretty good idea of what they are currently working on and what's coming up next.
Hmmmm dunno...I dont think update it too often...eg the redtail 23s aren't in the completed pics....Also the whole reserve one with a dealer is still a bit of a rugby scrum....set....pause...ENGAGE!....a little faith (in the dealer) and patience goes a long way.

USPS told me my new redtail jigged Northfield wouldn't arrive until Monday, however that was a lie because I just found it in my mailbox! This is a behemoth but I could not be happier with. The jigging is perfect, the walk and talk is great, and the shield is sleek and reminds me of a .30-30 shell (perhaps I need to take this and the Winchester '94 into the pasture together). The pull on the spey blade is about 5/10 while the drop point clocks in around 6.5-7/10. My only nit-pick is that I noticed a shiny spot roughly halfway up the spey blade which I believe is from a little blade-rap. The edge does not rest on the spring when closed so I think I will just be a little cautious when closing it.

This is a superb knife and I cannot wait to start putting some patina on these polished blades.

After reading this...pulled the trigger on a Redtail too

Always worth the wait...took 8 days on the road to finally land in my mail box. Pull on this one is A LOT lighter than my micarta version. But still stout, perfect for this knife. Walk and talk is better in all regards, just smoother. No blade-rap that I can see yet. Lots of character in the bone on these. Some lighter yellows. So cool. Can't wait for the single blade version.

You sure did score a pretty one!!

I am still waiting on my beaver tail that shipped out in the 16th. It apparently is just sitting in a truck because USPS is understaffed. That is what I was told by USPS today when I stopped in. The bad thing is that the store I purchased from is less than 75 miles from my house. I ordered a Japanese chefs knife from Japan, that shipped DHL, on the 25th and it was in my hands on the 29th.

Sorry for the ranting.

Time for you to turn in a Lost Shipment Report my friend .

I've had three USPS Parcel Select packages I ordered in mid June just arrive a few days ago. They originated anywhere from 150 to 2000 miles away. Before the Pandemic, I used the USPS Informed Delivery service to keep track - however, with Parcel Select the package often goes into a kind of limbo where anyone could have it (and no tracking) for an extended period of time: From the USPS: "...a significant amount of the current destination-entry Parcel Select volume tendered to the Postal Service comes from parcel shippers who have traditionally been our competitors: DHL, FedEx, and United Parcel Service (UPS)."

Forgive my ignorance, but how do you pre-order something before you even know it's available or they're making it? I mean, I can't just special order 1 knife, right? I didn't realize GEC was this specialized and limited edition. I guess that's how they keep the prices up...
Also, who's CK? I saw Kifer Cutlery ordered the blue camelbone ones, but they aren't up on his site yet either. Did he order them to keep them or do you think he'll sell them? Sorry. I've bought GECs before but just off this forum or the bay and never had to deal with this. I have no idea what the mesquite looks like so could never have pre-ordered it.
About a month ago while looking on the GEC website I noticed that Franks Classic knives was having a #23 SFO made. I emailed Frank and asked if I could reserve one. He said sure and that he’d put me on the list and that I’d be sent a PP invoice for one when he got them. Two days ago I received the invoice. I payed for it and just got notification that it shipped out today. I’ve tried this with other vendors and have not had the same results. As mentioned before CK has an early reserve system that I have used with some success. The process for buying a Northwoods when one drops has been a crapshoot at best in my experience. Good luck in your search!
