2020 GEC #23 Trapper Thread

Got a woodland micarta 2-bladed version inbound.

Figured this would make an awesome belt carried knife, so also have a DannyCollinsLeather open-top sheath being made for it.

Sorry Taylor! This knife is a thing of flawless beauty. A perfectly executed piece of cutlery that was so urgently needed in today's world. A knife that may actually have the ability to replace every other knife. Something akin to the Unified Field Theory but for cutlery. ;)

What's the pull like? I actually have one waiting for me in my mailbox but i just thought I'd ask.

I'd call it firm but easily manageable. Maybe a smooth seven and of course with a half-stop.
Exactly as it should be IMO. Hope you can get to the mailbox soon, I think you will find it amazing.

So I just had one (Beaver LL) in my cart, was ready to pay and I decided to cut it loose. I only need one of these and I have a Mesquite reserved. Hope someone enjoys the one I would have gotten. I also hope to see some Mesquite pics soon on the GEC page.

I know the "Traditionals" section of BF is a well-established community, and so I apologize if I'm treading where I shouldn't be. I received my GEC 23 Trapper in Antique Autumn Natural Bone yesterday, and I'm beyond impressed. It's a thing of beauty! It fits my hand perfectly, and I'm more excited than I should be about the spey blade.

I get the impression most GEC customers are collectors before they are users, but I was wondering if anyone is planning on EDCing their 23 like I am? It's a little on the heavy side, but I'm thinking it's going to serve me well!
I’ve carried my beaver gnawed 23 since the day it arrived. I was afraid it would be too heavy so I secured one of both versions (two blade and liner lock). Surprisingly the two bladed version carries just fine for me in a slip in the back pocket. No complaints whatsoever. I’ll have to see how the liner lock compares when I receive it.

I do agree with you on the quality of it and I do use it . As far as an EDC , I have more than 1 EDC .

Cool. I had a white bone 23 back in the day and got rid of it because it was a nail breaker. Also because it was a spey blade and I like a drop point better. 7 so about right especially with the LL. I dont want to push the LL over and have the blade close on my thumb!

A solid handful of knife and a real pleasure to use. Both blades are ground fairly thin and cut well. I sharpened both on a coarse Lansky diamond to thin the edges further and then gave them my regular edge treatment. The knife then spent 5 days at camp performing food prep, whittling wood curls for fires and other miscellaneous tasks. Carried easily in shorts using a clip type pocket sheath. Pulls are in the 6 1/2-7 range and quite smooth. A29E6DF6-9DCF-4D22-8CDE-78418867BC24.jpeg

Well, the pull is a lot more than I like, more around a 9 than a 6 or 7. About the same as the old white bone one. Not sure if I'll keep it. I'll work with it and see if it eases up after a while. I Iove the looks of it! It's a very attractive wood and jigging. Not sure how to the pic I just took of it, so you'll just have to take my word on it....

Mine was a strong 9, 9.5 when I first got it. I flushed it twice and have used it for about two weeks now. I’d say they are a freaking awesome 7, 7.5 now. I absolutely love it now. At first I ripped my thumb nail off and cursed it and was about to sale it. I’m glad I kept it now.

I just opened the blades to half stop and sprayed a little wd40 with the straw on the pivots. Worked them back and forth a lot. Couldn’t believe all the black junk that came out of them.
Polishing compound probably.

I flushed it, but no black stuff. I think the back spring is just stiff as hell. I'm letting it sit in a 3/4 position. Someone told me that might help. May have to get a nail nick thingy if I decide to keep it. I play classical guitar and I need my thumbnail smooth!

My 73 was like that at first. Painfully strong. I flushed it. No help. I then let it sit for 2 months with the blade open 1/3 of the way. Made not a lick of a difference. I decided “to heck with it, I’m carrying it anyway.” Within a few weeks of regular use it seemed to get easier. Now it feels just a hair stronger than perfect. So either regular opening rounded the tang enough to make it easier, or my thumbnail just got used to it. Now it’s no big deal and I never think about it.

I got my woodland linerlock paid for.... now comes the fun part.......... waiting for it to arrive! Hopefully the mesquite will be coming along very soon.
