2020 GEC #23 Trapper Thread

A solid handful of knife and a real pleasure to use. Both blades are ground fairly thin and cut well. I sharpened both on a coarse Lansky diamond to thin the edges further and then gave them my regular edge treatment. The knife then spent 5 days at camp performing food prep, whittling wood curls for fires and other miscellaneous tasks. Carried easily in shorts using a clip type pocket sheath. Pulls are in the 6 1/2-7 range and quite smooth. View attachment 1374880
I saved your photo to my phone. I hope you don’t mind.

I've got to be honest, this shield is a big disappointment to me.
The short blob of a shield just doesn't fit with that super long knife handle.

I know, everybody has different opinions. :(

I agree. I was looking forward to the Woodland Micarta before production started, but that shield has sort of put it off my radar.

Yay... My Jeep is getting a new knife.:thumbsup:
Goodbye Buck 112 Light and Hello GEC #23 Liner Lock.

I hadn’t thought about that, John. These would make a really nice truck/Jeep console knife. My current truck knife is an as-ground Case large sodbuster, but I’m not particularly attached to it.

I don't need a jigged Brazilian single blade. I don't need a jigged Brazilian single blade. I don't need a jigged Brazilian single blade!!!!

I don’t either, since I got the double blade Beaver Tail, but I sure do want one now that I see ‘em. I’d probably buy one if it didn’t seem like they’d all flown off the shelves already.

I definitely want to pick up one liner lock to go with my two-blade. Mesquite would’ve been my first choice, but I missed out on that. I’m betting the UN-X-LD Bullets are going to look pretty tempting in single blade, too.

Well, I think the knife won. I messed with it for a few hours last night, used it for breakfast prep this morning (with a nice patina forming), but now I can't open it. My thumbnail is toast. I was using a penny to get into the nick but it slips too often and nearly caught me.

SO short story long, I was thinking about getting a sleeve for it anyway,...do they have sleeves where I can just leave it open and carry it like a dagger in a scabbard?

I think I read a little bit of disappointment that the redtail jigged bone was brown not red. Any chance the description is that of the pattern on a redtail hawk's feathers and not for the color?

Collector Knives has slips for fixed blades. I have on for a paring knife and it is very nice. Some even come with clips to hook onto your pocket. You might also ask @traumkommode about turning it into a stable fixed blade. I know he did that with one of his using epoxy.

I think it's going to be the perfect Jeep knife.
I'd never carry one this big, but it's nice to have one handy.

Looks like they canceled the woodland micarta.
What do you mean they cancelled the Micarta?

That's what Kifer posted on the GEC Facebook site, with the pic of the knife from the GEC site, 2020 Rendezvous Knife cancelled.

It's pretty dang stable as it is with the LL and bear trap spring! I'd like to have the ability to close it in the future, especially if I decide to resell it.

I have a few boot knives with sheaths, so yeah, something with a pocket clip or at least a belt loop would be nice, but I work in an office, which is lenient, but still the fit must be perfect and slim, not bulky.

Johnny Ruff is down the road from me and sells knives, as well as making saddles and leather goods. I may go by his place today and see what he can come up with. I'll post a pic if it comes out good as a suggestion for others who get the bear trap pulls.

If you are careful you might try rounding the edges of the tang to give a little more give on the movement. You’d have to find a pretty small file and be very deliberate. It would also mean flushing out the blade once you finished to get all of the metal debris out. I don’t know if that would work or not, but maybe one of the knife makers here could chime in.

The Rendezvous (annual event at GEC scheduled for next month) has been cancelled. Doesn’t have anything to do with the knife.

Yea, I think they just canceled the rendezvous, not the knife itself. They have progress pics up of the woodland micarta LL on the site. They just added that red text to the cover page to get the word out.

It's on the GEC front page. I didnt know the Rendezvous was a meeting of GEC fans, so I guess the meeting ggv is cancel look ed but the knives are still available? I'm guessing here.

Okay, I was confused when he said the "knife" was cancelled. Haven't heard of a knife being cancelled before.
Yes, I knew the Rendezvous was cancelled. Better safe than sorry I guess. Don't want GEC workers getting sick.

You are probably right. Although I don't know why there would be disappointment; the blade was scheduled as "Brown Jigged Bone" months ago.

I like the color of the covers on it. Not sure why folks are upset. The jigging is also very well done. My favorite of the run so far (I have an OKCA on the way so we will see how that one ranks).

Well, not sure if you all can see the pic, but this is my solution to the tough pull. Mr. Ruff opened and closed the knife with no problem and mush relish. "Now THAT'S how knives used to be made!" Essentially implying I needed to man up . He didnt get the whole "I have thin nails and play guitar" excuse, but he had lots of knife sheaths one of which fit perfectly and saved me from having to get a custom job.
