2020 GEC #62 Easy Pocket Congress and Pocket Carver Thread

I must admit Charlie, the look of your well loved friend inspired my purchase. Not a typical handle material I would go after but so glad I did. Now I gotta carry it again tomorrow and take a pic and get some patina started!

To be perfectly honest I would not mind if the whittler came with no shield at all.

I find it odd- on my 15 and 14 that do not have the shield? I kind of miss them, but i feel like shields are unnecessary... or at least should be. However, a poor choice in shield drives me away from a purchase. My practical side battles my aesthetic side; not required, but shields seem to add a level of finish that just makes the product feel higher quality. Even the odd shields (boot, guitar, banana, rose, etc). Then there’s the case of the hotdog shield where the name kind of ruins it a little for me. “Banner” shield would be better if you ask me. Now I can’t unsee the hotdog. Doesn’t stop me from loving my #35 or my #93, however.

I switched my EDC to this one yesterday. I wanted a lighter knife than the trapper I was toting! A friend tried to buy it, but I couldn't BEAR to part with it!!:)
You say Tomah-to, I say Tomay-to!!:D

I used to not like acrylics at all, but that tomato has really grabbed me. I just cannot find one for sale. I guess it grabbed everyone else, too... a 66 Bullwinkle in tomato is a grail knife for me....

Question. Did CK send out an early reserve notification on the Telegram app for the 62 whittler?

According to their web page it is set up, but has not been opened up to reservations yet.
Ah yes! Good catch Tim. I just seen the red (reservations closed) and assumed the worst. Thanks for straightening me out. Would you guys mind editing Mike's username out of your quote so he don't get bombarded with notifications? Thank you

whats unicorn ivory? bone? acrylic?
TY

A white acrylic with a subtle crosshatch grain.

I appreciate your putting this pic up... I had never seen unicorn before. I assumed it would be plain, smooth offwhite acrylic. Seeing the "matrix" in it really pleases me. I'll bet this will be a very elegant knife.

You're welcome. It really is neat looking stuff, but hard to photograph. It's the closest to ivory I've seen in any artificial material. The #13 forum knife is ivory micarta, which is nice too, but doesn't have that grain.

I missed this Unicorn Ivory Acrylic discussion earlier in this thread, but thought I’d add this photo for anyone who’s interested. A couple years ago I ended up with three of these #25’s (I still have one, gave the other two away as gifts). The interesting thing about having three of them in hand was seeing the variation in the “grain” of the Unicorn Ivory. The one on the right had the sort of checkered grain like r8shell r8shell 's, the middle one had more of a long, swooping grain, while the one on the left had almost no grain at all.

I’m hoping to add a Unicorn Ivory #62 to my #25, but I missed out on the preorder, so I’ll have to do it the hard way. :D

Thanks for that photo. The variation is interesting. I didn't know if the grain on mine is less pronounced than some, or if other folks were better photographers. It isn't always obvious, depending on the light.

I took that photo back when we lived in AZ, and I’ve since realized that I really miss the lighting I had for outdoor photos there. Frequently clear skies, few trees, and the house blocked the direct sunlight from the north-facing back patio where I normally took knife photos. Made it pretty easy to get clear, well lit photos without weird shadows or reflections. Our house here in MN is surrounded by trees, which is nice, except when it comes to taking knife photos (and cleaning gutters ).

I would say that, compared to the two knives on the left in my photo, your #25 has a more pronounced grain, similar to the knife on the right. The far left knife is the one I kept for myself, and it really has almost no grain. Here are a couple other fairly well lit photos of it.

Mine should be here no later than Monday... hopefully Saturday, but I'll be out of town until Sunday...

Just ordered a red jigged bone! Can’t wait to check this one out. These must be trickling in, a found a place with 12 left after I bought mine.
