2020 GEC #62 Easy Pocket Congress and Pocket Carver Thread

Maybe the pen tip is proud, maybe not.

You are right, may be , may be not. Hard to say from the photo.

No proof either way but now the thread has evolved to the point of the design being unworkable for curved tip blades

If there is a problem, then the explanation given by Engrsorenson is relevant.

methods for repairing the supposed defect

Isn't it part of the hobby? I've modified some knives i find now excellent by using a file.

This is a typical and entertaining aspect of many social media discussions and “issues”.

It's indeed entertaining. Digression is the salt of conversation.

I would be really surprised GEC would produce a defective design. All this talk is pure hobbyist speculation and hopefully you will give us good news when you will have received the knife. That's what i wish.

Dan.

I just got my red jigged 62 paid for... now comes the patient waiting...
I think I'm as jazzed about this one as I was the 92 Eureka... the 92 did not disappoint, and I don't expect the 62 to, either...

Knife patterns fascinate me, because successful execution requires more than just “what shape is this going to be”. The traditional folder with its multi-bladed functionality also requires careful consideration of blade length and style. As dantzk8 dantzk8 pointed out, it may be possible to do some custom work to improve one aspect of the pattern. @black mamba did a great job converting the pen blade to a coping blade on a #44, which to me is the best configuration for that pattern for similar reasons as discussed here for the #62 with the pen blade.

you know what would make this more unique? Flip the handle around and have the blades open from the flat side. Then the springs could be dished and we could have some really low-riding nail nicks and a nice swell for the palm. It’d be the best of both worlds.

anyone notice that the spacer is on the pile side of the pen blade, and that the pen blade is krinked over? I have a case mini copperhead that does the same thing. It drives me crazy because I don’t understand why they’d want to do that. The #35 has the spacer on the mark side of the secondary and they didn’t have to krink anything.

and I guess one last comment- I’ve never had a super proud point on a GEC, but I have had one that I could catch my nail on which is too close for comfort. I just like some longevity before I have to file the kick. I’ve heard similar complaints on the #93 real lambsfoot knife, so it does happen. The 93 Ramsfoot buries the tip well and the kick has so much I could grind off that I’m sure I’d have a serviceable knife all my life even if I used it daily.

The older ones with coping secondary will never have an issue of the tip being too high :D

I think it's been explained on a number of occasions why GEC sets the tips just shy of being proud on many of their patterns/configurations. If I remember correctly it has something to do with the assumption that the user will adjust according to his/her needs. Of course, that only is applicable if there is plenty of life in the kick to begin with.

With straight edged blades, the issue can be amplified a bit. You see a lot of old Lambsfoot knives with proud tips.

Back to the tip protruding controversy:D Only time will tell;) But it's certainly not to do with the design of this pattern, which is very old, nor is it t do with it having a sloping frame, the backspring I assume is curved as well so it will allow the blades to be cited correctly. Nor is this a Swell-Centre frame as has been said-that's a Cokebottle or other types, Pen, Moose, Eureka etc.

When looking at a closed knife at an angle even slightly into the bladewell, a blade tip can appear to be protruding above the liner when that might not really be the case. When viewed from the side, that same knife may very well show the blade's tip at it's normal position.

Just ordered my blood red 62. Would love to get the whittler, but I'm pushing the limit with this one. So much for new year resolutions! I was going to only get future forum knives. Guess I couldn't resist. Is there a clinic somewhere to help me with my "problem"?

I think you'll be well pleased:cool:

Clinic?? It's all in the mind, just tell yourself you like needing more:D Alternatively, you could try going through an airport with your entire collection, get them confiscated and see if that helps? Or send them to me....;)

I know I sound like a broken record, but the time to buy a GEC you like is when it's available. You can always regret it later and get most of your money back just by selling here on the forum. Not that I have ever sold. :)

Look at the great sunken joints on this knife! It should really be quite the whittler (and not just the Whittler!) the 2 blader too!

One thing is for sure, I’m really enjoying the variety GEC is producing. They really have something for everyone.

I have an order in for two each of the 'pocket carver' version of this knife!!
I have a few friends who don't hang out on our beloved Porch
(Poor them!!) but who carve on occasion, and are as interested in one, as I am. I've enjoyed carrying my 2011 version, and hope these new ones are as good!:)
