2020 GEC #62 Easy Pocket Congress and Pocket Carver Thread

Great! They will begin production on my wedding anniversary....
but.... a cigar band?

Don't be hasty. Just got off the phone and they did decide to put bolsters on the f/f. They are also going to put in a cigar band. Finally, they are due for production on 4/1.

whhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!?

just when I feel like I’ve got them figured out. Expectations and GEC do not mix.

Carrying my 82 Dixie stockman today. I notice it has the same type of "catch bit" the 62 EPC has, however it's nickel silver.

I can't tell from the angle, but is that a center liner that runs all the way between the two springs? I think that's technically different from a catch bit, although it seems to serve the same function.

that extra liner in fact exists on most stockman knives. It creates the room needed to krink the sheepsfoot (in its traditional blade combination and location.)

you will notice that the Dixie Stockman’s secondaries are likely the same stock thickness, matching the spring. The 62 pocket Congress is identical to that setup. Imagine now adding another spring and a single main on the pile side of the #62 and you’d have a slightly different version of what is essentially a stockman.

whether or not that’s called a “catch bit”, I do not know, but we know it’s design and it’s purpose now; that’s good enough for me.

edit: re-reading my post I can’t help but to think of the movie “Tropic Thunder”.

One down the center, also one on the pile side.

I had a 13 Office Knife. I recall that it had an actual catch bit installed. I recall that ApostleP did a review on this one in which he discussed the catch bit in detail.

Catch bit or not, I'm pretty excited about the unicorn ivory that I have on reserve! From the few red jigged bones I've seen photos of and feedback for, I'm sure this will be going into my carry rotation. Just in time too, I'm starting to get bored with the 5 or 6 knives I'm rotating through now:)

I've let this thread get ahead of me, as often happens. But there's a lot of cool stuff coming from GEC.

I will probably get a Farm & Field Carver, but I like the stamped shield also so I'm not sure about the Tidioute.

I'm definitely looking to get the Unicorn Ivory Acrylic. The teaser picture looked AWESOME!

Yeah I reserved a Unicorn Ivory Acrylic myself along with a Red & Black Micarta Farm & Field.

Just received my 62 easy pocket congress in blood red jigged bone and I do believe I have found the ONE for me. This knife is perfect!! It will be in my pocket for a long time to come.
Glad to hear it! Got mine last week. I'm new to GEC (been collecting fixed blades and, more recently, modern folders for decades) and along with the 62, added a 15, 92, and 93 to the collection. Just got the 93 and 15, so too early to say, but the 62 is amazing!!! I *really* wasn't sold on the wharnie when I got it, thinking the tip might be too delicate, but after a few days of carrying it - wow. Just wow.

V VentureDan solid knife choices! I own all of those but the 62 pocket Congress- hoping for the Whittler version. I hear a lot of comments about wharney tips being weak, but it just makes me wonder what on earth people are doing with them. Granted on paper the tip is weaker because of the obvious geometry, but in use they’re just extremely useful and I’ve never had a problem.

Cant wait until they start shipping out the unicorn ivory 62s!

Which GEC blade shape do you guys find makes for the best food prep slicer? Would it be the wharne? Or maybe the muskrat?

I was whittling a particularly stick piece of pine when I broke the tip of the warncliff on my 82 Dixie in stage.

Filed it down to a sheepsfoot and kept on trucking.

for my money I love the ramsfoot for food prep. On a cutting board put the tip on the board and draw the blade through whatever you’re slicing. Cuts above its weight class.

Just got my #62 Red Jigged Tidioute in the mail. I'm happy to report that the build quality is up to the expected GEC standards.:thumbsup:
The pulls are a very 'snappy' 4, which I find to be acceptable on this pattern. While I generally like a stronger pull, it's really not needed on an office knife such as this. Fit n Finish is spot on, the jigging is nicely done, and i really like the new shield. I think everybody will be happy with them. :)

man, that’s a first for me. Did you feel like you might have tweeked it? Or was there possibly an inherent weakness in that particular tip?

good news is the fix is straight forward.

Definitely hit some grain that was not as soft as the rest of the wood and was digging in to make a deep vee cut.
