2020 GEC #62 Easy Pocket Congress and Pocket Carver Thread

Sometimes, you just have to take that leap of faith.... :)

Kierkegaard is rolling over in his grave, but I agree... if it wasn’t for some legendary possibilities on the horizon I’d throw myself into it. This year I’m trying to get one GEC and put the rest away for my son’s college.

edit: I realize there’s potential for resale, but with as many produced #62 frames out there as I think there will be, I’m sure I’d take a hit.

I don't know about the April run but you can do the math on the current run and get close.

Interesting that they called them liners... that’s not a word in the GEC glossary ;):p.

1555 #62’s in F&F configuration...
so roughly 389 pieces per cover.

... gosh that doesn’t seem like a lot.
I’ll have to hope it’s not a scramble, or my decision will be made for me.o_O

I wonder how many #62’s they’re going to be making if the F&F are starting production on April fool’s day? Seems like a lot of time, and now I’m pretty excited to see what the red and black linen F&F will look like. Not knowing is what’s preventing me from preordering.

Apologies, that was an attempt at humor. The F/F are not going to have bolsters nor a cigar band. I only said 4/1 so that it would be recognized as humor. I'm bad like that ;)

Back to terminology wranglings:cool: Special word use will morph according to both context and time. Regarding the SCALES controversy, breathe in, everybody is right:D Just a preference. Yes it can refer to the handle materials of a knife, AND it can also refer to the metal plates they're attached to or liners as I prefer;) See The Oxford Dictionary here 1933.

I prefer 'scales' for handle material, never liked 'covers' as it sounds like something that's being hidden;) or something that can be removed quickly, think MODERN knives and changing handles in a moment, oh no!:D But it's all taste, so we can't have a dogma-war:rolleyes::D

It arrived today after only a week!!! No insolent Customs intrusions either;) My picture is rubbish as it was dark already and anyway, others excel in that Dept. I don't, so we have great images to look at already:thumbsup:

Just want to give a mini-review instead:thumbsup: Fantastic build quality F&F, no perceptible faults or gripes from me anyway. The severely krinked blades are a masterclass in nesting, don't touch the liners, don't scratch each other- clear, clean and crisp. No blade-play at all. No gaps anywhere when held up to light. Flush spring in open and closed, both ends. Jigging goes into the bolsters on mine which is a huge attraction, the shield is completely at home on this 'canvas' The pull is 6 which I find optimal for the pattern, audible snap on both blades before oiling, so that's very good. Red colour is dark and richly even. Blades shave hair, so they're set up OK. The very near sunk joints certainly do make it pocket friendly rather than pocket ripper:eek: and the knife carries superbly & has great feeling of balance when in the hand. I am biased in that single-spring 2 blades or Pen style are my favourites, others may not get drawn to it of course but I doubt anyone could fault the quality&execution here. Maybe I would Ofer it without the half-stop for smoother opening, but that's a minor point.

Overall, fantastic pattern and the variations in scales and finish are going to give a lot for people to choose from and probably availability will be plentiful. Well done the workers and owners at GEC:cool:

Initially, I was going to skip this issue - then I talked to some people getting them and finally, I had a look at the F&F run...and, after that (some credit to my fondness for the lightweight oldster in the pic below) "resistance was futile"...

When Jiki made the joke I got it, but you know the inner workings of GEC, so I completely thought you were serious- especially since it’s your business! No harm done; I should have stuck to my guns!

All three statements were equally true. If the f/f have bolsters and a cigar band - they will start production on 4/1. I guarantee it :D Generally, this subforum is like a family sitting around a dinner table - we will have some fun with those we love. Because we too have been teased a bit coming up thru the group.

Now, I am going to make a couple of unrelated observations because they have been bothering me over the last year...

It is always curious to me how we are willing to throw out everything we know due to a mis-labeled picture or some secondhand guess. Not thinking of any one in particular; but I catch myself all the time reading something on social media that on first read I think is an obvious joke. Just to find out it is being relayed as fact or being used to pit one fact against another. My goal (as I am a conspiracy theory knucklehead) in life is to assume the integrity and truthfulness of everyone; right up to the point that you know it is not correct. So, many times I will ask about stories that get posted, only to get laughed at by the authorities. Not a mean laugh; just a "you're not that stupid Mike" style laugh. But, one time out of a hundred, there is something to it - thus there is always that tiny chance....

But, generally, you have to be careful because this is 2020. And one thing I have noticed is that kids that grew up answering all their questions by asking it on google - now consider search result answers to be de facto standard. But those that are actually the keepers of the knowledge, A) Don't reside on social media (for the most part); and B) Even if they did they would be too humble to concur that they knew something. I watch youtube videos all the time from "the authority" on something or the other because they have googled it and studied it for three weeks. And when they are proven wrong; they act like being wrong about something they are stating as fact to thousands of others, is just the price of learning. Up until a decade or so ago, if you stated something as fact that was eventually wholesale discredited - nothing else you said deserved significant credit. Now days, 80% or so accuracy seems to be enough for them to retain "the authority" moniker. On the 20% that they are blatantly wrong on will just get corrected in the wash or maybe become the new fact.

Don't take anything I say as a fact on its face. Take it as an opinion that provides a jumping off point for you to discover your own conclusion. I know things that very few other people know about those things my life has provided experience; but there are vast numbers of topics (most of them) in which I know little to nothing about. I try very hard not to state anything as a fact, if I am not relatively (95%) sure about and even then I want to plant a disclaimer right up to 99.9%.

(sorry for the rant)
