2020 GEC #62 Easy Pocket Congress and Pocket Carver Thread

Gave it a nice matte finish. I think the acrylic looks more like paper micarta now. I like it.View attachment 1279846
That looks nice. Fine sandpaper?
I can't tell, but did you just matte finish the bolsters and shield, or did you include the acrylic, too? For some reason I'm surprised the grain still would show without a smooth polished surface. This might be something for me to keep in mind if the covers get all scratched up.

I totally get that some folks don’t like the dealer etching for SFO’s. But what I don’t understand is why it’s a deal breaker for them and why there so upset.
The etching is so easy to remove and problem solved. Or just use it and eventually it’ll be gone.
For me I don’t care either way and On a brighter note my Micarta is waiting for me in my mail box and Snakewood should be here Monday

Does anyone know how much thicker the carvers will be than the easy pocket congress? I do a little bit of whittling and would love to have something more pocketable than my flexcut knives.

Jiki Jiki I’m no where near your skill level, but I’ve tried a few different folding knives for whittling and I agree it’s hard to find something decent!

Thank you, trust me I'm always learning something new so just keep at it. I have been playing with this Ettrick from A Wright while I'm waiting for the carvers. I thinned and shortened the blade and it is coming along.

Comparo pic!
I'm hoping the carvers will be very functional! The slight hollow curve behind the open blade makes a great shelf for the thumb when push cutting or whittling sticks!!
(Everyone needs smaller sticks!!):)
I put the (elephant tooth) #61 in just cuz!!
The semi-sunk joints make these knives very pocketable!
I keep the three-blade because the stag is great, but all those blades fit awkwardly into the handle IMO!

Thank you sir! I used fine sandpaper and did include the acrylic. The grain still shows great, I personally like it better.

Thick covers are useful to increase the precision by a better control.

Dan.

Agree, notably on smaller knives. Thick scales on any knife offer greater comfort if using for a protracted period. The Micarta 71 Bullnose is one of the best work-knives: all steel, bolsterless (obviously) and thick comfortable Micarta slabs that are well rugged

Blade etching...
I think some people are concerned with the value of the knives they purchase.
Maybe they think the etching detracts from the SFOs, which usually carry a higher value.
Just a thought though, I could be wrong.

How does that go ...
I kissed a girl and I liked it ?
Well like the girl I love this Gec#62 DLT SFO Maroon Micarta !!
Pleasantly surprised Since I was unsure about this pattern but man it feels good in hand . Blades are well centered and nice and snappy. Rather then go on about all the boxes it checks I leave it at it checks them all for me and so glad I stepped up blindly for this one and Snakewood on the way.
Thank you DLT for this beautiful SFO and Gec for another quality traditional with top notch fit and finish.

Mine should be here Monday. I got the jigged bone and thought, “well, this is damn near perfect for my uses.” So, I got an ivory one too. Then I saw the DLT micarta and ordered that one too. I think the micarta suits this pattern better than any of the woods or smooth bones.

I like them all and now I want them all lol.
Much looking forward to the Snakewood but it’s all a matter of preference.
One thing for sure I really really like this 62 pattern and the fit and finish on my first is remarkable.

So I'm not going crazy afteral. The bolsters on the new run are indeed smaller!

I can't wait for the pocket carver. I've got to catch up on the last few pages of this thread, but in the interim, thought I'd show off my first two spoons.

I can totally see slipping a spoon project in my pocket along with the pocket carver, and whittling away while waiting for kids practice to end or just killing time in the backyard.

Nice work I see there!!
Please show us your hatchet and other knives!!

Rough shaping the third spoon. I may wait until the 62 arrives to finish. Or not... I'm indecisive.
