2021 Prices Are Out

An Update From Lynn Thompson

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not saying I am going to abandon premium steels. I absolutely love 3V as a steel and I hope to bring out three more knives made of this wonderful steel in the near future but they are going to be expensive. Not as much as if they were made of S35VN or XHP but still, they will not be cheap.

Sincerely,

Lynn C. Thompson

That's what Lynn said. I expect a 5/16ths Trailmaster in 3V to be expensive. Not THIS expensive, but that is a big chunk of steel. However, the prices on all the new knives are not just high, they are absurd. I can afford it, but I won't, because that would be silly. When I can save big money buying a Bark River something is wrong.

Ditto on a supposedly more value oriented knife if you look at the price for a new drop point XL Voyager which is almost $30 more than every other XL Voyager with the exception of the Kris, which to me has a real reason to cost more.

I guess what has happened with Cold Steels in the past is that when they come out, they're available for about 15% off MSRP, and over time, they drop to around 40% off MSRP.

For the big 3V knives, that difference is worth about $150-200, and I think they'd be competitive at the lower price (assuming manufacturing quality and HT are up to scratch). At the higher prices, I can't see many people going for it, unless they're real fans of those specific models.

They can ask. We have to wait on what their dealership network bids, and then it would be our turn to choose.

Clearly, the new partners have added nothing but additional overhead. I don’t see anything positive for the brand. Dumb, deaf, stupid and in hock is no way for anyone to compete.

I see the new Talwar is up for preorder, $246 in S35VN (plain or serrated). My feelings are mixed at best -- that's solidly into ZT pricing territory. At $150-$180, I think I'd be in. Heck, an aluminum/G10 Large Espada can be had for ~$210!

I love that they brought back the Talwar, but the new pricing is not awesome.

TRAIL MASTER (CPM 3V) | Cold Steel Knives
"I can’t think of a better knife to take on an outdoors adventure than a Trail Master. Now available in 3V steel it’s more indestructible than ever. Featuring a 9 ½” long clip point blade with an uncharacteristically strong sturdy point it will shrug off wear, tear and even abuse, like water off a duck’s back. What’s more you will be astounded by the cutting power and edge retention you’ll get with 3v steel. Buy it while you can, 3V blades are difficult and time consuming, not to mention expensive to make!" - Lynn Thompson

"Buy it while you can..." Even the product description hints that these knives may turn out to be a one time or limited edition project. Or it could just be good marketing on the part of Lynn Thompson! I don't doubt that they will be spectacular knives, but I'd much rather pay $300 than $500 for one if possible.

I’m sure the large 3V blades will be good knives, which is why I think they’d be very competitive in the $300-400 range. But in the $450-600 range, they’re pricing themselves at equivalent prices to Busse and CPK, and above Survive! By comparison, a GSO-10 is $350, and GSO-12 is $430, and they may actually be available in an acceptable timeframe by the time the new Cold Steel knives hit the streets.

The 3V Trailmaster and Recon Scout might well be the best production survival knives ever made. But best or not, that price is really hard for me to justify.

I just ran across a place that has them on pre-order for around your price mentioned. I'm looking at these as well, I just can't decide which to choose serrated or regular ground.

I seem too recall reading something about steel stock prices above 1\4" being much higher. I can't recall where or from whom that info came, but it was credible source IIRC. So, the 5\16" stock may add a lot to this, but, 3v would be a good reason to shave that spine down to 1\4. With the right HT, 3v is extremely strong. Guy from SK! repelled down a cliff using an old spec (non-Delta heat treat) 4.1 (less than 3\16") as an anchor.

I have a Gurkha khukuri with the 5\16" spine and think its perfect. But, there is no reason for a TM or RS to be that thick using 3v, or probably even SK5 for that matter. But, changing specs may not be worth the cost.

I saw on midway they have the trailmaster coming soon, their price is 349.95; that isnt bad; i think at that price its not too unreasonable. At that price im probably going to get one; hopefully the recon scout comes in at 300 id do that, too.

At $350 I am tempted. But the sheath kinda kills it for me. For $350 I expect a complete and perfect package. I shouldn't have to drop an extra hundred just to replace the sheath.

Recon scout looks like its 304.00 on their coming soon ; better than the 400 i thought it was going to be.So its 349 trailmaster,304 recon scout .....

And w that title said, the retail on many items are sky high; 475 for the Recon Scout 3v ,500+ for the Trailmaster 3v that S35 4max is as much as the 20cv one. I hope the street prices are much lower .Check their site under 2021 products and hold on to your hats,at least on the higher end items. The lower priced items are low,but 8cr13mov and 4034 as expected....
Labor costs higher? where are they made?

The Hold Out XL has returned, in S35VN, with pricing that reflects a similar jump in the (still not out yet, but soon?) Talwar XL: KnifeCenter has them for $217. Looks like it might have the more reasonable (IE not pants-shredding) G10 CS sometimes uses.

When I occasionally see a Hold Out XL on the secondary market, they're about this price. I gotta say...I'm tempted!

yes id say 15% to 20% but it seems as time goes on the price lowers a bit more from what ive seen. The san mai trailmaster retails for 499 its going for 270-300 but its been around for years. The 3v trailmaster is 539 so im guessing it comes in around 325 or 350 maybe a bit more, which i still more than i thought ; i figured 250 recon scout 3v 300 trailmaster 3v. Are they worth it? i just dont know I have a carbon v trailmaster which has been great over the years will the 3v one be that much better? And i got that with a few other knives, sold them wound up w the trailmaster for free...
I have too many knives etc., to have any interest in paying nose bleed prices for another redundant toy. If the 3V sales figures prove weak, more models will likely come out in SK-5 or Aus10. I might have some interest then.

Doc, what type of tape did you wrap your drop forge with?
Self-fusing silicone tape . Only sticks / melds to itself , so is easy to remove .

Commonly used to insulate and waterproof electrical connections and for plumbing /auto hose repairs .

Not real sturdy , but easy to replace .

Provides a nice rubbery grip .
