I'd like to hear your take on the Hunter Pro. The price has been spooking me off, but I can maybe massage my local guy a bit.
I like this new grey color too!
Hoo-boy. Ok, so....I LIKE mine. The only one I have at current is the one in the classic red ALOX, without the
Spyderhole "opening hole" and while it's a pretty good knife, I will say that there are really only one reason for buying it:
1. "I like Victorinox knives, oooohhhh they made a large lockback folder with a 4 inch blade! It'd be awesome to have a large folder made by Victorinox, I'm IN!"
2. See reason #1.
And that's it. I don't want to derail the thread
too much. Let's get the negatives out of the way first:
1. It's heavy for what it is, like Buck 110 heavy. It was expected, of course given the nature of the construction.
2. It's a large blade, and if you don't get one of the models with the blade with the opening hole, you're effectively left with a two-handed opening blade, although it IS pinchable.
3. The pocket clip is VERY long (although it IS deepish carry), and you basically have to wrap the end of the clip on the table top if you want the pocket clip to go on the other side of the knife for left-hand carry.
4. The blade grind is basically a saber grind (which isn't my favorite, though since they consider this a camping/outdoors knife, I suppose that makes sense).
5. It lacks overall refinement. Vic is clearly not a lockback folding knife making company. As I said, it's heavy, the lockback bar is somewhat mushy, they for some absurd reason left off ALL manner of opening methods off the blades of literally half the lineup. Obviously, not made of a modern supersteel.
That said, there are a few good things about it as well.
1. Every one of these I've seen comes with a screaming sharp edge. I've gifted one of these to at least three friends at this point, all of whom saw mine, and immediately wanted one. They aren't knife guys, so that tells me that once again, Vic was able to make something that attracts people who don't need all the bells and whistles we're used to.
2. The fit and finish ARE good on these. Those big slabs of red ALOX are beautiful, with the contrasting silver Vic icon at a canted angle to look neat. No harsh edges, they made this to fit in your hand.
3. Which it does. This knife fits my XL-2XL hand very well, and they do open smoothly.
4. There are certainly worse ways to spend $100 (the Reds come up pretty often discounted). I know, I've done it.
Are there better knives for the money? Absolutely, and I won't try to sell you on the Hunter Pro. From an objective perspective, if you're going to get one, get one with the opening hole, it'll be a much more functional one-hander. The issue here is that Victorinox is sneaky, and they only offer some colors in one blade shape (with the hole), and other colors with the blade without. So, that is what it is.
That said, I'm probably going to end up with both the 2021 and 2022 Hunter Pros, I
personally enjoy them, but I'm good with their foibles. I am really liking that dark grey color, and think it will contrast well with my current ALOX collection, which is more or less all bright colors.
