2022 GEC #81 Coon Skinner

Managed to get a deluxe snakewood today, is the tube just a standard northfield tube or did they do the cool artwork like you saw with the two tidioute versions?

Finally had a chance to admire my 81 Standard today - I consider this one a Standard +. Definitely better than I expected.

I had the opportunity to scoop up one of the new 81s so I took advantage of it. Surprisingly (to me, anyway), the one that intrigued me the most was the one in textured Coffeehouse Acrylic - so that is the one I picked.

It's a fine knife, very well built and it definitely sports a clip style that I am beginning to favor more and more. Nimbler, lighter, and pointier - everything you'd want in a pocket knife blade and this one comes with two of them! 😁

I felt the same as you Dylan, Pàdruig Pàdruig . I cannot understand why, but this one called out to me. I usually avoid acrylics, and I was skeptical of the grooved acrylic on this one. However, GEC’s Coffee House always looks great. Having said all of that, I am still not 100% sold on this cover option. It is pretty far out there. However, the knife itself is a dandy; light, useful, and perfectly built. It is definitely one of GEC’s better efforts.

I love that Snakewood Jim, Jiki Jiki !

I ended up with a "Standard" Snakewood from my dealer.... At the time there were no "Deluxe" versions floating around.... So I sent Joan Mae an email to see what she had in the store.... As luck would have it, she had a couple Deluxe "Store" models for sale....

So off I went for a nearly 400 mile trip which burned through 1/2 barrel of 89 octane.....

As far as I know this is the complete run.... The Deluxe has some nice mottling as well as some medullary wood rays..... Interesting that the snazzier store knife is a cheaper cousin to the plainer first quality version!

Some "whoops" on and near the shield. A bit unpleasant, but definitely not worth sending it back to GEC. Hence, candidate for shield engraving. Love how they finish linen micarta, nice and smooth! Blades are so thin, that's a surprise. I guess it's not suited to skin something bigger than a coon.

Gives me a lot of fun when I grab it, seemingly "right", and then notice there's no shield... then flip it, and there it is, ha ha.

I've been using mine to process ducks, it does great!

Got my Snakewood (deluxe) today - a few small hints of stripiness on the show side, none on the pile. Can't win 'em all!
Great pattern though - I've used my #81 Bull Moose extensively and this feels like a more refined version. Also got the Red Onion Micarta which is standout - for some reason I seem to be more won over by the Tidioutes as time goes by.
I had been a little concerned that the matchstrike nail nicks might look like a bit Rough Ryder-esque, but on seeing it in hand those fears are dispelled - much more subtle, no eyelash effect whatsoever!
Curiously, I see that GEC have omitted the Snakewood version from those parts of the website which detail the date of release - I wouldn't mind but I like to catalogue these.
