My feeling exactly. The Delrin seems an appropriate nostalgic choice -- reminded me immediately of my Imperial BSA knife from the mid-60's...I don't mind the cover material and I don't mind the shield really either. But the whole package doesn't convey that classic camp knife feel with bail, awl, can opener, etc. I'm thrilled that folks dig it but, in my opinion, GEC missed the mark on this one.
This is why I equated "Johnny on the Spot" with Port-A-Potties

Exactly what I thought. The Nostalgia of this knife reminds of when I was a kid reading through a comic book and there was that page with Sea Monkeys, sticky grabber hands, x-ray glasses and a knife or two that could do everything. The whole package is like a time portal for me I gotta dig out my old comics and see if I can order this one before the scramble...lolI love the plastic handles they chose to use on this knife... like the Good Ol' Days... Nostalgia.![]()
This. NW knives are selling on the daily for $400+. If this was about money, GEC would be cranking out single blade saber ground patterns in fancy covers. If it was about maximizing profits we’d be looking at different steels potentially even, but they choose to stick with traditional steels and traditional heritage. To me, that they used delrin on this model has nothing to do with saving costs or "cheaping out." Once again, GEC is tipping its hat to the history of American cutlery.
Despite the many examples of your whittling skills that we see here on the Porch, I am still blown away every time. Amazing!!!
Ah… this to reminds me of the time I was riding my motorcycle a BMW R1200 GS which looks like a big dirt bike down to Four Corners a popular destination on Sunday mornings in the Bay Area. It’s a two lane road with lot of curves and not many chances to pass slower traffic. I came upon two gentlemen riding Ducati racers and blew by them. Upon arrival the guys on the Ducks rode in. One of them asked me how my bike was able to out perform theirs. I just told him, sir as my grandpa used to say, “ It ain’t the arrow it’s the archer”. So endth the lesson. The person admiring a photographer's work invariably asks what model camera was used.... To which the sage master gives an off the cuff answer about a $5.99 Brownie Instamatic sporting a blue flashcube.... And the novice wannabe runs out and purchases said camera... But, try as he may, he can never replicate the old master's work....
The moral of this story is that it ain't the tool that creates the artistry.... It is what is between the master's ears that counts.....
I agree. I was secretly hoping for some nice wood covers for the cattle knife. I really like the blade combo and the 35 pattern so I’m very tempted to grab one and have it re-covered.I usually just keep my comments to myself when it’s not very positive, but the Cattle Knife and Camp Knife are disappointing because there was so much potential. Only 1 cover option on the Cattle Knife when it was a pattern that deserved at least 3, and then the plastic “wonderboy” version of the Camp Knife with that blade configuration? It hurts to think how good these could have been.
Is the 4th edition of Levine's book better then 5th edition?Bernie Levine is getting old and tired, like many of us, and doing less, also like many of us!!
His "Guide to Knives and Their Values, 4th ed." was a valiant effort, and went a long way toward standardizing knife terminology; but that effort is like herding Cats!!
I love his book, and refer to it almost daily! I even have a reserve copy on my bookshelf for when my primary wears out!! He will live forever in my world!!
4th is the last one by Levine in fact. 5th is 4th strangely remade by the publisher to make some additional money out of it. You can read about it on Levine's website. I've recently seen a link to it here somewhere. Is the 4th edition of Levine's book better then 5th edition?

I remember reading a rather detailed post from Levine himself in the forums here, completely dismissing the 5th Edition, and touting the 4th Edition. A search of the forums should turn it up.4th is the last one by Levine in fact. 5th is 4th strangely remade by the publisher to make some additional money out of it.
