2022 GEC Cattle Knife/Camp Knife #35 Thread

I usually just keep my comments to myself when it’s not very positive, but the Cattle Knife and Camp Knife are disappointing because there was so much potential. Only 1 cover option on the Cattle Knife when it was a pattern that deserved at least 3, and then the plastic “wonderboy” version of the Camp Knife with that blade configuration? It hurts to think how good these could have been.

Regarding the Camp knife - haven't seen them yet so will reserve my opinion. Not a fan of delrin, but the history of this pattern can't be denied.

As to the Cattle knife, if you look around BF just a little bit you will see complaints about them making only a few of several handles instead of just making a lot of one handle. If they make 1000 of the same knife, there will probably be 900 different people able to get one. If they make 4 variations of 250pcs maybe 500 different people will be able to get one. The collectors, hoarders, and flippers will all take as many variations as the can and some will grab from as many dealers as possible; and these guys know how to play the drops. So by making more of a single variation they can distribute them more broadly as most collectors and hoarders will only want one of each.

I am excited to have gotten an order in for one of these with my local dealer, it should bere soon.

So, now when we saw all 35s, it's time to ask what was that blue thing in the end of the hall??

What configurations/covers were you both hoping for? Classic camp knife with bail and other bone cover configurations? I think we will see some nice recovers. I think I would have liked to see a stag cattle knife or at least another jigging pattern and color.
I’m not who you were asking but you got me thinking of combinations. A camp knife with jigged micarta of a camp color variety would be clutch. Jigged wood would also be nice, perhaps with the beaver shield.

Got my Cattle knife last week and unfortunately was not happy with the mark side cover. I believe this knife should have been a store knife.
I have sent it to GEC for replacement although I'm having to pay shipping both ways.

Won't mention the dealer I got it from but they said to contact GEC. I think that the bone cracked off after the shield was attached and then ground down to smooth it out. I don't think it was a natural low spot in the bone, if it was surely they would have used it on the pile side. I don't think it should have ever made to dealer especially for a $200 knife not acceptable IMO.

I'm glad that GEC is willing to replace it but not happy about the added cost of an already expensive knife.

Natural irregularity in the bone. It happens with natural materials. Here is a similar spot on my 88.

Well I was to low on the standby list to get one from Mike.
Anyone letting go of theirs please keep me in mind.

Also it has been dyed. Which is done after jigging, before assembly.
I always thought that dying is made before jigging and that's what makes a discoloration on the corners of the scales, like those light yellow corners near the bolster of goldenrod sawcut Barlow. So is that for sure?

That is from the final finishing and shaping. If they dyed before jigging, and could, the cut outs would be lighter.
