2023: A Knife Odyssey

Happy Fixed Blade Friday, to all you fine folks. Today’s sharp thing is another Arno Bernard Marmoset, but this one is sporting some truly beautiful desert ironwood burl. Hailing from AB’s Marquis collection, the Marmoset was likely initially intended to be more of a bird & trout type of blade, but its slim profile and light weight make it an excellent all-around EDC knife that is easily carried in the pocket or on the belt.

I hope everyone is enjoying the start of their weekend. I have with me a CRK small Sebenza 31 from the 2021 Halloween run. Plaza Cutlery has been a fixture in the knife community since my early days in the hobby, and they commissioned a limited annual run of Halloween Sebenzas each year for the past several years. Unfortunately, it seems as though 2022 was the final year for these gems.

The weather kept us inside, so another lazy Sunday in the books. Today’s soft pants companion was a Bret Dowell mini dogleg in crosscut canvas micarta with a belt satin CPM-154 blade. This little guy comes in at 3 1/4” closed, so it is tiny and easily pocketable and yet plenty mighty to handle most EDC tasks.

Another day, another Dowell. Today’s selection is a 3 7/8” closed trapper in CPM-154 and more vintage crosscut a bad micarta. If you look closely, you’ll notice this knife’s micarta is the same as the canvas micarta from yesterday’s mini dogleg. This knife is the same size as a CRK small Sebenza and is capable of handling anything you throw at it.

Excellent taste!

I enjoy your interest in small fixed blades :) Nice collection, nice appreciation.

And speaking of small fixed blades, here’s a pretty awesome Hydra from Tom Krein. This little beauty has a satin D2 blade and some truly breathtaking desert ironwood burl over black liners with a black micarta pin. I mean, just look at it! And for those unaware, Tom Krein worked for Bob Dozier and developed a mastery for extracting every drop of performance possible out of D2.

I have some catching up to do!

Here we have a Spyderco Caly 3 in laminated ZDP-189 and carbon fiber scales. There is not much to say that has not already been said about this particular version of the Caly 3. This is classic Spyderco through and through. This one spent a few years in my pocket in my early knife collecting days over a decade ago. The combination of design, materials, and execution are peak Spyderco, and to me, this is their 🐐.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, party people - one of America’s favorite excuses for getting embarrassingly intoxicated at work happy hours. Barkeep! A round of awkward next-day apologies on me! 😂

I personally am a fan of having an excuse to show off cool green knives. This day’s cool green knife is Thys Meades’ take on Bob Loveless’ City Knife. As previously stated, Thys’ work is truly spectacular, and this one is no exception. Paying tribute to Me. Loveless’ affinity for green canvas micarta, this vintage stuff is adorned with what Thys calls an “antique” linen micarta shield. If you look closely, you can see how Thys cut the block of micarta to capture the aged outer layers as they fade to the lighter layers that were inside the block. The dude is a wizard.

This Al Mar Hawk is probably the oldest knife in my collection, likely having been made in the early 90s. With its mirror polished AUS-8 blade, ivory richlite covers, 3 1/4” closed length, and slim ~1/4” width cover to cover, it is a classy little number that has accompanied me to more than a couple formal events. However, these days it serves me just as well on lazy soft-panted weekends.

This day saw a Boker Solingen Barlow in the pocket. This beauty is sporting a satin 440c blade and green birch covers. For those that have not checked them out, these little barlows are extremely well made , as is most everything that comes out of Boker’s Solingen factory. At 3 1/4” closed, I think you would be hard pressed to find someone that takes offense to this adorable little fella.

Happy Springtime everyone! I don’t know about you, but I am super jazzed to not be able to breath for the next couple months!
This Micarta Monday saw a GEC 62 in my pocket. This particular beauty from the 2020 run was a Smoky Mountain Knife Works SFO and featured natural micarta covers with satin hardware and 1095 blades and a sweet double bomb shield.

Today’s carry is another City Knife from Bark River. This one comes decked out in Arctic Dragon Scale handles with yellow liners. It comes with a laser sharp Elmax blade with a full height grind. Knowing Bark River, I have to imagine the full height grind was not intended, buuut I’ll take it because it is awesome.
