2023: A Knife Odyssey

Happy Easter to everyone whose thing that is. This morning’s egg hunting companion is a Boy’s Knife from Mike Moran in some beautiful dyed spalted maple with a hand-rubbed satin finish on the CPM-154 blade. Mr. Moran puts out some excellent work with great f&f and some seriously snappy action. As an aside, the figure on the pile side cover in the second to last picture kinda gives me Starry Night vibes.

Happy Micarta Monday to you all! I have on me today a large Blakiston's Fish Owl Lockback from Moki. Being the big brother to a similar knife in a previous post, this one is 4” closed with a ~3” blade made of AUS-8 with linerless black linen micarta handles. Coming in at a feather light 1.5 oz, it is large enough to handle many of your cutting needs while being light enough to go unnoticed until you need it.

Today’s carry is another Runt from Fiddleback Forge. This is an older one that’s rocking 1/8” O1 steel with a tapered tang and box elder burl scales with black canvas micarta bolsters, black liners, and orange pinstripes. While I tend to prefer their switch from O1 to A2 a while back, O1 is a breeze to get crazy sharp. Also, look at that handle! 😍

Happy Wharncliffe Wednesday! Today’s sharp & pointy thing is a small single-blade wharncliffe trapper from Jason Taber. This little fella is ~3.5” closed with a sexy hand-rubbed satin CPM-154 blade and some really cool vintage rag micarta. These covers started out pink and yellow and have mellowed out to a nice tan color through time and use in my gross, sweaty mitts. Jason gets some killer micartas and always has something cool in stock for future builds.

I was forced into the office today, so I went with a Ricardo Romano small zulu decked out in ebony covers and fluted bolsters with a hand-rubbed satin CPM-154 blade. This is one of the classiest knives I own, and it is often my go-to for various events since it is about as innocuous as a knife can get.

This little guy has been in my possession for quite a few years now and has the battle scars to show for it. For a slight change of pace, I thought I would snag some additional wear pics to demonstrate that, believe it or not, I actually do carry and use all these beauties from time to time.

Happy Framelock Friday, party people! Today’s entry is another small Sebenza 21 (shocker, I know). This particular specimen is a Blade HQ exclusive with carbon fiber inlays and Chad Nichols stainless ladder damascus. Not much to say other than it’s as awesome as you might think it is. 😁

Happy weekend, folks! For throwing down for a 1-year-old’s birthday party, I have a Ben Krein Forager in tote. This little fella is sporting a satin Nitro-V blade with a nice high hollow grind and some super sexy vintage Westinghouse orange paper micarta over black liners with a black pin and lanyard tube. Holy smokes is this micarta is amazing. If you like knives but haven’t been keeping an eye on Ben’s work, you are doing yourself a grave disservice.

Sunday just seemed like a slipjoint kind of day. Today’s entry is a Mini Dino from Thys Meades. This one comes decked out in some truly excellent burlap micarta with a black rag micarta shield and a hand rubbed satin N690 blade. As always, Thys’ work here is impeccable and the fit & finish and walk & talk are the stuff dreams are made of. 17A41F31-F90B-46E9-BAB5-627C92693874.jpeg59C2C6F2-AD6B-45FB-A7D6-5ECA1285E104.jpeg91876B52-AD88-4745-B373-A84EAD8FBBC3.jpegE1DBCEB0-3D1E-437C-8506-1FEFEFAFB200.jpeg

I just found this thread, and wow do you have some knives! Such a cool collection. Where do you get Tom and Ben Krein’s knives? Some of those little fixed blades look quite nice.

Thank you! Many of my knives from Tom and Ben have come directly from them, but the best place for their secondary market is the Krein Knives FB group.

Ah, Monday…you’re the worst 😂. But, all is made better by this Skosh by Casey Bradshaw of Bradshaw Blades. This little guy is rocking koa scales over orange liners and a hand-rubbed satin AEBL blade. Coming in just over 5.25” OAL, this is a classy little blade that is made to cut.

Today’s entry is an absolute gem of a knife from Nick Rusev ( Rusev Rusev ) of Unbound Knives out of Sophia, Bulgaria. Nick was kind enough to accommodate my request to shrink and slim down his Lonesome Road model to a comfy 5.9” OAL.

This Mini Lonesome Road is sporting a RWL34 blade with 2.7 mm stock and belt satin bevels and blasted flats and spine. With a tapered tang and crowned spine, it is light and comfy for your digits. Sporting purple box elder burl scales with black G10 bolsters over black liners and red accent, this is one seriously good looking knife. Oh, and let’s not forget the matching lanyard bead. Yowza! 😍

You can find some of Nick’s work posted over in the Knifemaker’s Market in the Exchange. I highly recommend checking it out.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful hump day. My pocket companion for the day is another GEC 86 2AB, this one being decked out in rust orange natural bone covers with a mirrored 440C blade. Not much to say that I didn’t say in a previous post. These are simply excellent knives. Go find one.
