.....

i have to admit that sucks big time, even here in england we can carry ceramic / titanium knives if we like, albeit sub 3 inch ones but still... california seems to blow goats IMHO

The TNT is not non magnetic. Talonite will set off metal detectors. It is non magnetic if you put a magnet to it. It has to do with the way the carbides are arranged in the blade:)

First of all, sharp thinking is illegal in Kalifornia much less anything Tom Mayo might make.

Second, Ti does set off most metal detectors including those used in airports. Ti can go through some really simple, older detectors, but nobody who's halfway serious about security is using those old things anymore. Do a search here at bf.c and you'll scare up several threads in which it's been explained in almost subatomic detail.

Can I have your house/apartment. I love Malibu.
Newport Beach ain't bad, but Orange County is filled to the brim with stuffy humorless people.

Non-magnetic knives have been a felony in CA for years. This is just PC puffing by politicians. All non-magnetic means is that it will evade x-ray and metal detectors. Knives out of ti, talonite, stellite et al are picked up very quickly by modern machines. This is just scare hype. Remember when the news reported that the new "plastic" guns (ie Glock) could not be seen in x-ray:rolleyes:.

Gee, thank god I can't afford a TNT:rolleyes:
Seriously if you have a TNT and let's say you get stopped for speeding, if the cop sees your TNT I doubt he is going to say, "nice knife....... HEY WAIT A MINUTE, IS THAT NON-MAGNETIC?!!!";)

Actually, it is just a matter of semantics here. Stellite 6BH AND Stellite 6K as well as Titanium are NOT magnetic in any sense of the word. The thing that sets off the machine is NOT the magnetic properties. Brass will set it off, as well as orthopedic Titanium parts inside peoples bodies.

I thought Tom would make stainless blades besides the Talonite and Stellite.

Actually, I wouldnt worry about it.......its just another stupid law that cannot be enforced!

As I understood it, it was aimed specifically at the $5.00 plastic “CIA Letter opener” style of knife that I’ve seen on eBay.

All though when I heard about it, I did think of a ceramic knife that I have might fall under it, but I am guessing it would be OK because of the steel liner.

come on why whats the point of making these knives illegal if a person really wanted to pass the metal detector with a knife they can easily get one of those all polymer knives like the ones cold steel makes off of ebay or some other online store for a fraction of the cost of a TNT

California is a communist state for all I am concerned. You can't own anything there. No matter what anyone thinks, All these laws do is make law abiding citizens vulnerable. The Gang Bangers and outlaws are still carring what ever they can get their hands on. Sorry for the vent, But when I think of the state that this country is coming to, I makes me mad as hell!!!!

AB 352 was signed into law by gov. Davis at the end of July...Here's the text of the bill::

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/bill/asm/ab_0351-0400/ab_352_cfa_20020605_111721_sen_floor.html

That they used 09-11 as a basis, and excuse to enter this into law is sickening; the basis of the bill, so it is claimed, is because the 09-11 suspects used various edged instruments in the instrumentation of the hijackings...To everyone's knowledge, the weapons used were common items, no fancy undetectable non-magnetic weapons...

I read it, it is stupide revision of earlier law, main concern it points out is carrying into the airport or courthouse. Of course the law remains fuzzy- if it outlaws ALL knives that cannot be detected, how will they "detect" you are carrying?!!!
Main consequence is to stop COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION of "nondetectible" knives in CA, there is no way to enforce it in every day life. Like I said before, in the event a police officer sees your knife say in routine traffic stop, how can he tell it is "nondetectible " knife?
From prosecution standpoint it will provide for "penalty enhancement" if you are caught trying to take something liek this thru the airport or courthouse check point.

Ummm Guys!

What is the big deal! You are getting all bent out of shape by someting that is really no big deal. I as a knifemaker totally agree with the bill. I just got done reading the entire bill, and I see nothing wrong with it.

It is just like the 2nd amd. issue. Yes Americans have the right to keep and bear arms. But does that include RPGs? Or how about a TOE missle? They are arms are they not?

This is not about whether a knife will attract a magnet. This bill has nothing to do with knives made from steel, stellite, Talonite, Ti, alum or even Liquid Metal. All of these WILL set off a magnetometer set at the proper level. What this bill is meant to do is to close the loophole in the old law.

The 1999 law could be gotten around by adding a little alum strip to a resin knife. This allowed the knife to be picked up by a standard wand but it would not be picked up be a magnetometer. A wand can detect the smallest amount of non-magnetic material. I have used wands on thousands of people. I have had "hits" on people only to find that what I was detecting was a small piece of foil that you tear off the top of a pack of cigarettes. But you can carry a whole pack of cigarettes through most magnetometers without a beep. This law is a good thing.

It is really cheesy that they used 9-11 as the reason. After all, ALL the knives used in the highjackings were legally carried onto the planes. They chose those knives for that very reason. And if you are going to highjack a plane and kill hundreds of people this law will do nothing to stop you from carrying a plastic knife. Hey, murder is already against the law! But lets not make these items readily availible.

Even though in truth all the thug has to do is grind a edge on a piece of Micarta.
