.22 update

Another vote for the CZ 452 line of rifles. I have the Ultra Lux with the 28.5" barrel and it is a keeper.

Yes on the Benjamin in .22

This has good accuracy for practice, and with 8 pumps will make a good short and medium ranged hunting rifle.

I got my first 10/22 when I was ten, but that was 1974. For a first gun it is the one to get. Pick one up a Wally World and and shoot and have fun. Also, there are tons of accessories and you can modify/change it was you desire. My 10/22 now wears a Tactical Innovations fluted bull barrel with a Hogue OD stock. I put an extra 3x9 Leupold Var-XII on it. Now I just need to smooth the trigger. I did all this stuff myself and it has been fun and a good learning experience. 22 semi-autos are just fun.

Go check out rimfire central forums for all the 22 info and more you could want.

Good luck and be safe.

Several reasons NOT to get a 10/22. Your first rifle should be bolt action to teach you discipline and proper form. It's much to tempting to blast away with a semi auto and not really even aim, espically for a beginner.
Second, the 10/22 is not very good out of box, jams, inaccurate, bad trigger. There's a reason they make so many after market parts? Why waste money making it "decent" when you can have a great shooter out of box? The large capacity mags are great but that brings me back to my first point.

My first .22 rifle was a Remington Nylon 66. My uncle gave it to me and taught me some discipline as well.

Although its no longer made, the 66 is still available on the resale market.

Some features that are great for beginners are:
Light weight
Loads from the rear so the muzzle is always pointed downrange when loading.
The bolt is recessed in the receiver so one can use it as a single shot.

To use it as a single shot rifle:
There is no bolt hold-open. Roll the rifle to the left and drop a round into the recess so it is laying on the bolt. Rack the bolt and the round falls in and is chambered when you release the bolt. This is how I was taught and was only allowed to use it this way until I was trusted with it.

For a sem-auto its an outstanding beginners rifle.

I agree with most everything that you have stated. I own both a 10/22 (for 27 years) and I have a CZ 452 as well as other .22s. One of my 10/22s shot .5" groups at 50 yards and was fairly reliable. However, I had to send it back to the factory because the reciever was drilled and tapped off axis. Because of this you had to crank the adjustments on the scope to the extreme, and they would all fail after about 6 months. The one Ruger sent me back was more along the lines of what you described. I have got it working better now, but they are not the holy grail.

It is best to start out with anything but an auto. Could be a quality bolt, pump, lever or break action/falling block single shot. Buy the best you can afford, as you will hopefully have it forever. And forever is too long if it is not up to snuff.

Rupestris, I had a Nylon 76 as a kid, the lever action model. It was cool beans for sure. Wish I still had it!
