.22 WMR Recommendations

Looking for the 22LR or .22 wmr to go with my Ruger SS6. Carry 1 type of Ammo.

Not really a strictly for hunting, some, not really a SHTF gun but you never know. A good general purpose gun.

Thanks again and keep it up

Having said that, I'd first of all see which the Single Six shoots better. I have a hunch it would be the Magnums. Mine shoots the magnums decidedly better than LRs.

If it shoots magnums better, I'd go for a Marlin bolt gun in .22 Magnum. I prefer the tube fed rifles, but to each his own. You definitely see the difference between a magnum and a Long Rifle in a rifle more than a pistol.

IMO, it's kinda funny that people complain about the cost of Magnum ammo, and then recommend Stingers and the like, which at least in my locale, cost exactly the same as magnums. Although you'll never beat the .22LR "brick" ammo for price.

However, if the Single Six shoots LRs better, IMO, the Marlin 39A levergun is the best .22 rifle out there, bar none. It has "real rifle" feel and handling, although you pay for that with weight, but dang, are they accurate.

Yeah, probably right. And already having the SS does change the complexion of the decision. But you could also easily trade the combo SS for a .22 LR and probably get some money to boot.

I'd like to have a one each of every model of Marlin, Henry, and CZ. :)
I had a 10/22 but lost it to a pawn shop back in college.
Yet you seem to rule it now for this purchase. Why? Accuracy? Reliability? Don't assume that all rimfire semiautos are as inaccurate as the 10/22.

I agree with whomever said in this thread that .22WMR is too expensive.

I have a couple pistols in that caliber and don't shoot them near as much as I should because of the expense.

I went with a CZ 452 Lux, very accurate with its excellent iron sights. Ammo is typically CCI 40 gr mini-mags, although I also have some Velocitors.

Oh I would not rule out a 10/22 or any major decent brand, just forgot to type it in.

A .22WMR or a .17HMR has a serious performance advantage over .22LR, especially the .17HMR.

While some comments are that .22LR has gotten way better, this is true. But so has the .22WMR. The .22WMR is also a serious close range defensive round against humans also. One advantage that a .22WMR has is that it uses a standard .224" bullet, while the .22LR is smaller in diameter. This allows the .22WMR to be loaded with extremely effective, already available, commercial hunting bullets, like the Hornady V-Max.

The .17HMR is a round that many don't understand well because of the light bullet. The pest penetrating rounds are the FMJ hollowpoints. This round will penetrate a 'stop' sign at 175 yards. Because most of the weight of a round is usually the bullet, a round of .17HMR weighs about what a .22LR does. The .17HMR is everything that the .22LR needs to be, though it does cost more.

A lot of people complain about the cost of the .22WMR or the .17HMR, but that is because a lot of people go blasting and like to burn off 500 rounds of ammo just for fun.

If you are backpacking or otherwise traveling light, then the weight difference is negligible and you need as potent of a package as possible per round carried. In a situation like that, you're probably only carrying a couple of hundred rounds or so, and hence the cost difference is but only a few dollars.

The best .22WMR or .17HMR rifle is the 10/22mag (semi-auto, steel receiver, 9 round rotary mag). The lightest is the Chipmunk kids rifle in .22WMR or .17HMR (single shot bolt action, 16" barrel, 2 pounds).

For 'survival', backpacking, or a bugout, a pistol in WMR is probably the best to have because it's easy to carry and concealable.

Probably one of the better bugout/survival packages that you can have is a potent and concealable handgun, like a 4" .357mag revolver, hi-cap Glock in your favorite caliber, etc, and a single shot Chipmunk rifle with a scope in something like .17HMR or .22WMR in a scabbard strapped to your backpack.

The 22WMRF and the 17HMR are very destructive on small edibles and are best left for varmit shooters IMO. True, both are much flatter shooting and are easier to make good shots at range with than a 22lr, however what good is that when you make the shot and your rabbit is turned inside out? Chris

Well thanks for all the info folks. I have a couple Busse's I am gonna sell and get a rifle. Still no firm decision but .....

oh well

Add about 50 yards and .22 WRMF should be no more destructive than .22 LR.

I have found my stock 10/22 to be quite accurate. Sure, there's always room for improvement, but I can hit what I aim at consistently. My father has a Single Six that I like very much. I have not much handgun experience, and it is the only handgun I can shoot decently - much better than my own .22 semi auto. Single action revolvers just seem to "point" more naturally in my hand, and the nose-heavy weight sure helps.

It is, completely different bullets.
Make that 100 yds and yeah, never noticed that the Mini-Mag use a 40 gr GLRN while the Maxi-Mag uses a TMJ flat nose. That would make a difference in terminal ballistics. Thanks.

I never use solids for hunting, shot a whole lot of game with solids to have them run or get in a hole after the shot. Any 22 mag HP I have used tears the hell out of game, any solid, round nose or flat lets too many run off and the HMR flat destroys anything jackrabbit and smaller. If you know any small game bullets in WRMF or HMR I am all ears but I haven't found any yet.

Best game bullet I have found for small game is Winchester dynapoint LR with it's small HP it anchors game reliably but doesn't tear it up bad. Chris

I feel your pain. Had to let go a synthetic stocked 10/22 with scope and a Remmington 700DM Mountain Rifle in .270Win scoped with a Bousch and Lomb Elite Scope when I was in college also. Don't really miss the Remmington as much as I do that little Ruger. To add insult to injury my wife at the time came into an inherratance about 4 months later so I hurried down to the pawn shop to get the Ruger back. Walked in just as it was being sold. Made me sad and a little sick to my stomach. I had to turn around and leave. So I went out and purchased an AR with the $1000 bucks she gave me. She is out of the picture now but I still have the AR.

Wife / AR --- AR / Wife.....

well I think I will just go to bed on that one, lol

I have been meaning to get one of those and try it out. When I heard Winchester wasn't going to make dynapoints anymore I stocked up. I probably have a lifetime supply, but that Paco tool does look very interesting. When I am hunting I take mostly headshots but it is nice to know I can still anchor game with a body hit without destroying the meat, especially if you are talking about survival. Chris

EDIT: I will second and third ras' 452, I have a trainer and it might be the most accurate out of the box sporter weight rimfire I have ever owned, I probably have 400 dollars above the puchase price in my favorite 10/22 and my trainer will still out shoot it.
