24 hours with a BK2

That's why I said most.

Oh I agree, didn't mean if it came across snarky. I wasn't trying to prove you wrong, only point out some laws are overly strict in regards to vehicles.

Maybe I'm paranoid (I don't plan to let anyone search my car without a warrant either), but a felony is no joke. I've weighed the extra blade length vs. court costs & loss of 2A rights if convicted and to me it's not worth the risk. Trust me, I wish it wasn't even a consideration.

Now if I'm on my way to go fishing, I'm comfortable explaining the filet knife in my tackle bag just fine.

No worries, you didn't come off snarky, I just wanted to make sure you didn't miss that in my post. Its easy enough to do. :D

I'm the same ways, but honestly, I've only had one bad run in with LEO and it was my own fault entirely, I don't blame the cop one bit for tazing me. I earned it.

And, I can agree with what you said, about being careful and taking the law under under consideration as well. I just have reasons to carry large knives sometimes, that don't have anything to do with the woods. Its just apart of my life is all.

I can also see if you are caught waving it around, threatening people with a large knife, as opposed to keeping it inside a bag in your car.

Often you can get away with something like a knife by how the cop you encounter perceives you. If you don't seem like a threat to the community in some way, generally a police officer will let you get by unless it's something really major.

Around here, our property borders a local wildlife area and state park. The rangers are so used to seeing me they usually don't pay me any mind unless they need help tracking something/someone or to ask me about any specific animals I may have seen.

Two of those guys I went to high school with.

I'm not saying there's no gestapo cops out there, there certainly are, but I've been able to get by.

Yeah... well, filed a police report and waiting to hear back. Just can't believe I'd been contemplating buying the thing for months, then had it for 1 day! That'll teach me to triple-check my door locks, not to mention being careful not to leave things I care about in it over night.

get a better GF :) that likes knives :> she should buy one for you :) :) :D :D

it was probably some scruffy college student. probably from Tufts ;) there's a LOT of theft in the Davis area. druggies. some of them are actually breaking into apts with people still home, and taking anything not bolted down. tons of bike theft. lots of stolen packages off porches. Somberville has too many hippies though, so there haven't been too many beat downs that i know of. that would send a nice message ;)

as far as the insurance company, you just tell them it was stolen from your car. locked of course. thieves have ways to get in without breaking windows. slim jims, and other tools. the insurance company only wants to know you left it unlocked so they don't have to pay out ;) course, without home/renter's insurance, you're usually out of luck.

i left my knife law by state book updated as of May 2011 in the car, or i'd look it up. imho, a farm implement/yard tool such as that, is perfectly fine in the car. don't take shit from the police. chances are though, your knife has ended up in a pawn shop. searchtempest.com will scan all your craigslists at once. look for your knife. i just ran a scan, but didn't see it.

Well surprisingly my gf told me to hold off buying another one until after Sunday, which is weird because I'm Jewish, but... well, ever since her niece said "Santa Claus has a beard just like Gabe" (not the other way around), it looks like I'll be wearing the costume, so maybe that earns me a present any way ;)

As for who took it? I dunno. I know someone who's on the street right now and he looked into and couldn't find anyone who'd heard of it, so yeah, I'm thinking probably some college kids or I don't know who. The police have the serial number of the ipod now, so that's something. Meh, whatever; stealing a sharp object will most likely lead a karmic loss of a digit at some point, so I'm not so worried. That's a really good tip to look on searchtempest.com -- hadn't heard of that before and might be using it come the spring to find my next motorcycle! Thanks Bladite!

This really sucks. Wouldn't you just love to have a 5 minute ... conversation with the thief in a locked room ? As to your knife laws. Heh - I think your thieves are better people than your politicians.

I would definitely love a few minutes alone with the guy... Politicians, eh? Depends which ones you're talking about ;)

I hate thieves, especially knife thieves. Probably some crackhead dope addict, hopefully they try to use the BK2 and it lops there f@$#$%# hand off:D

alright, need an update ;)

Well, unless she kept the micarta for herself she went ahead and bought another for me. Pics to follow.. Now I'm reading up on how to bring it to a mirror polish. Biggest questions are how to do it without messing up the edge and whether I can use a circular motion when sanding.

maybe she felt bad for leaving your car unlocked :)

congrats...

Wow those are some tough knife laws ! Just my opinion but I would hate to live in a state/city with those type of laws ....

Hey thanks everyone -- great to be able to share my pain with you all, but hey, it all worked out in the end, right? Who knows, maybe one of these days I'll walk into her living room and see her batoning some kindling for her fireplace with a sweet set of micarta scales, and then I'll know for sure! Oh and as for the scales, her sister's father-in-law offered to make me a new set out of wood in his shop, and since I had the old grivory set from the stolen knife, I was able to just give those to him! I told him I'd pick out the wood at a store nearby, so now I've gotta figure out what kind of wood to use. I feel a new thread coming on... First things first though, I gotta get to stripping.

Sorry for your loss.

Massachusetts law sure is strange. I'm small town Texas Leo and I don't know a whole Lotta folks who don't own guns (seriously).

I don't think I know anyone who owns a gun. I've only shot one a couple of times at a range, and that cost me big bucks. Up until a few years ago you needed to register bb guns.

And thanks for your concern -- it all worked out, right?
