2x72 Grinder WIP

Jeez that thing looks so good! I will definitely use that main design, but I might change a little bit.

Thanks :) I fixed it now,I like my new one better. Not that big of a change, just having the tracking box on top of the main receiver and having the shaft go through a support with flange bearings.

Okay, here's my updated grinder, from Keith's design. On the upward shaft, There would be a stopper on both the top and bottom that would probably be adjustable, with a fairly easy spring between, to add tension.

Here's the new grinder:

You wont mind grinding on the back of the grinder beside the motor? I was a little iffy about having the shaft run through the main support. I think a simple brace in front of the support would work. I dont know anything about grinders, though! I figured that the spring would be inside the "piston"

Mike, now that I've refreshed my memory on your grinder, this is how I would solve the tension issue:

I drew it out again, but I am having an issue with the rear platen being too close to the vertical support. The tracking system will have to be set back from the arm in order to get the clearance needed.

69, Would that vertical support for the spring interfere with adjusting the wheel tracking?

Keith, You can take the platen off.

If that small cylinder just left of where the spring mounts to the post is the 'hinge' then it shouldn't interfere.

Yeah, it is a hinge. Thanks for that idea. I think I'll use that design, maybe with an adjustable height on the spring support, so that way if I need more tension, I can raise it up a little bit.

To make it adjustable, you could just make the spring support one length and put several holes in it for bolts and either move the bolt or have several installed.

When I drew it out I figured that there would be a compression spring inside the vertical receiver.

If the wheel does not need to be at the back, you may as well put it near the middle, like the kmg, for ease of adjustment.

You guys are doing some cool CAD work.

I don't understand the rear platen. Will the whole grinder be on a lazy-susan of sorts? Or, will the grinder's stand be able to turn on casters to access it? Or, will you be able to physically walk around to the back side to work there? Will the belt/motor rotation be reversible so the dust keeps being thrown downward when you're working back there?

I was planning on having the grinder on a stand with casters, so I could roll it around, and then be able to turn it around and access the rear platen. I have a reversible motor, so I'd just have to reverse the belts, and it would save me from having to use a second attachment just for a flat platen.
