Last week a moma bear and 2 cubs attacked two 13 year old Boy Scouts at Yards Creek BS Camp (George Washington Council), Blairstown, NJ. A third scout ran to safety. Nearby adults drove off the attacking bears by banging pots and pans. The 2 injured boys were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and were then released.

The bears have been sentenced to death.

It appears the the boys were carrying candy in their backpacks which attracted the bears. The boys dropped the packs and climbed a nearby rock. The bears tore the packs apart and then went after the boys.

Troops leaders have complained about the large number of black bears in the area.

I'm glad the boys were OK and got away with what seems to be minor injuries. Which seems a bit odd, seeings how three bears were *attacking* them. I saw the end results of an adult human that got mauled by a medium sized (300#) black bear. The attack lasted about 15 seconds and ended when the bear was shot. The man that weighed 220# and was young and strong and he barely survived the attack.

New Jersey has been trying to stop bear hunts for years, which makes me wonder what's going on in the minds of the idiots in charge that they would listen to AR fanatics.

That said, I don't suppose that anyone explained to the boys that when in bear country, there are protocols that must be adhered to. Understanding them and being able to carry them out, empowers the boys to keep themselves out of harms way and shows some sort of intelligence on the part of the adults in charge.

There has to be a certain responsibility on our part when in the woods. We can't just assume that the bear will change it's ways, just because we move into the area on a temporary basis.

Be sure to check all State and local laws before banging pots and pans in New Jersey. Mac

In bear country you should not play around like you are just walking down a path in some city park, there are a differnet set of rules out there and people just do not understand that.

Thats how 99% of people here deal with attackers. Kick and scream like girls. Im surprised they were willing to knick their pots and pans.

No need to warn anyone of any dangers. New Jersey is safer than other areas due to our strict "no tolerance" attitude. Here we have armed professionals that will protect us at all times. :footinmou

"Woods" in New Jersey? hah! A park is about the closest thing thats left. Damn few people possess any survival, tracking, outdoors or street smarts here.

To the majority(including family) The few of us (maybe 15 tops) left are just "redneck pyscho killing machines ticking timebombs with an arsenal of deadly weapons" :footinmou

Where I am in northern New Jersey, we have parks so narrow you can see the highway from the other side of the lake :) Nevertheless, we do usually get a bear during the height of the summer heat. They come down from a little further north, where ongoing development eliminates habitat, but hunting to reduce the bear population is deemed morally inferior to feeding wandering bears on domestic pets and backyard bird feeders.

I think they want a more widely acceptable reason for harming a cuddly furry creature. Perhaps when one takes a human child from its backyard playground ...

Uncle Joe, Esav,

Cross the river! You mark the time and place and we'll toss you a rope. We'll even float your gear across. Mac

Did New Jersey ever get that bear hunt going?

I live in Maryalnd, we had our first bear hunt in a long time last month. 30 or so permits were sold, but the season ended after Opening Day because more than half the number of tags were filled, 20 or so were killed. I dont know why they ended the season, but the "animal rights" folks were giving the DNR crap about it. The Washington Post predicted that it would take hunters a long time to fill get their bears, but they were wrong. There was a recent incident in which a bear was taped on a hospital security camera, walking down a hall in a hospital. The bear got stuck in a room and the animal control or police had to kill it. Coyotes have also recently been sighted around the DC area, inside the Beltway. People have let their pets outside only to have them snatched by coyotes.

Hmm...this is a crazy world.

Today the court ruled the hunt is on and at the same time ruled the DEP commissioner Bradley, had the authority to ban the hunt on state owned grounds. The state wildlife management areas that hunters bought, maintain and pay for are off-limits. Off course this may all change tomorrow. Some two thousand permits have been sold. The bears are everywhere now going as far as the pine barrens. The animaniacs have much pull in this state because they are vocal and send thousands of e-mails. They pay for no wildlife santuaries, management, rehabilitation or any services but demand much.

The only thing crazy in this old world are the ones that think they're smarter than the average bear. ;)

Believe me, Im more than ready and willing to get out of here. I'll bet there some great Brazilian Jiu-jitsu places there! ;)

Hunt is off for this year. NJ supreme court ruled that we need another study done for a "comprehensive" management plan. Guess who pays for it? The 4000 hunters that ponied up the money already! (also the rest who bought a license this year)

I read about it. This isn't game management, it isn't about the bears. It is cultural warfare, pure and simple. It is overtly and deliberately anti-gun, despite what the gun-grabbers like to whine about not interfering with hunting. It is against self-defense, it is against self-reliance. It is pitiful how the world is being overrun by murderers on one side and their willing victims on the other.

This is such bullsh!t! :barf: .. Another knee-jerk reaction in the name of "Public Saftey"...

I would like to have gotten Momma Bears' side of the story!. :p

You hit the nail on the head. Thanks for "keeping the faith". I try to make sure that people understand this also, it's so gradual and deceitful that many don't understand the issues.

Iwould like to see if the anti hunting leaders change their tune if it was
their children that were mauled or would they say"I love little timmy but
it was just nature feeding itself and it really is our own fault because we
have destroyed the bears homes."
The really ironic thing is most likely the anti hunters probrably wouldn't
have a child in the Boy Scouts anyway. After all aren't they just junior
nazi's anyway?

fixer27, welcome to Bladeforums! :)

The situation here is complex. The group that was attacked should have been more alert. the area was important to them because it was sort of wild. By the same token, they should have taken better precautions but they responded pretty well.

The bear hunt is a separate issue altogether. There are people here who have no contact with the outdoors other than grass and flowers, and just don't relate to traditional sports and occupations. Their favored environments are conducive to the population density that overwhelms the voting power of more rural areas. The whole country faces a crisis of this lack of connection to our nation's underlying customs and values.
