3 day weekend in the mountains - part 1

JESUS CHRIST! 65 LBS!!!!

wow dude, i gotta hand it to yah, you're one tough fella. my trek packs probably weigh at max 40lbs. and thats for 5-7 days worth of walkin.

great pics though. looks like a crackin good time.

cheers.

Tell the truth. Did you keep an eye out for The lost Dutchmans mine?

I spent much of the time looking down for a glint of gold. All I found was some pyrite ("fools gold").

Many folks have lost their lives in the Superstition Mountains looking for gold. All around you can find the evidence of mining. Great place in the winter but when summer comes we beat it to the mountains for the 70 degree weather.

Looks like a great trip - who stuck with the tarp shelter and how did they enjoy it?

That would be me. The weather is perfect this time of year with very few bug issues. The main sound we heard was the creaking of the frogs in the creek. Thanks for the comments on the pics!

Looks a good place to be in, nice also to see people carrying weight. Best feeling for me is getting to camp, dropping my gear and setting up then having a little rummage about with just my water bottle and knife. Never feel more agile. You just don't get that when you travel light.

Looks like a great trip.
I am really looking forward to getting out soon.
Thanks for sharing.

great pics! Looks like you had the guys-who-can't-pack thing too! Great country!

Yah, one of the group had never backpacked before but did very well. Having a newby along is fun because he really took to the experience. Forgot the picts of the cliff dwellings.

I'm sure the original inhabitants were smaller than me. All the doorways and ceilings were low. Imagine it contained the heat better. They get snow at this alltitude and a drafty cave can be quite chilly. Notice at the top of the wall the marks made by their fingers while applying the mud. You can put your fingers in the indentations like it was made yesterday. The ruins are thought to be between 400-600 years old.

Awesome photos, all around. I really liked the cliff dwellings. Looks as though the weather was great for all to have a blast.

I would really love to see that in person. Super cool!

Looks like a great trip! 65 lbs is way too heavy for my lazy self, I don't carry more than 40, even for a week. Lots of people carry more than that, though, so I guess I'm just a whimp!

That looks like a really cool area. I was in New Mexico backpacking last week, that was a neat area but this spot looks really cool.

That was my question!

Nice area, now is the time to go. I have spent enough time traipsing around the Phoenix area in July and August to know that spring hiking is the only way to do it there.
