3 in one oil?

I use 3-in-1 for my sharpending stones and WD 40, Breakfree, RemOil, and Hoppe's for gun cleaning. I've never been bothered with dust but when things look dusty, I dust.

I had a friend, back in the day, that would take his service Smith apart, down to the last screw, and clean it with Marvel's Mystery Oil. I've got so many lubes, I just never got around to getting any of that.

It should work ok. I like to use Marvel mystery oil (MMO). I use it (MMO) on my firearms, sharpening stones, and knives. Good rust protection, good lubrication, good for sharpening.

Try either. It 's not high risk venture to experiment with it. If it works for you, and meets your needs, then great. Life should be simple. Don't complicate it.

3 In 1 was supposedly created as a bicycle lube.

WD40 is a lube. It's also a solvent. There's nothing really mysterious about it. Mostly a kerosene-like solvent with some mineral oil. The mixture allows good penetration. When the volatiles are gone, the oil is left behind. Gumming and varnish are a peculiar phenomenon I have not particularly noticed with WD40, but I suspect may occur due to other circumstances such as overuse, contamination, etc.

According to the msds, 3 in 1 is mostly naphthenic oil. A kind of mineral oil that should theoretically be less prone to gumming and thickening in low temps, IIRC. Interestingly, among bicycle enthusiast groups, the prevailing lore seems to be that it is a vegetable based oil and bad because it gums up. Go figure.

Marvel Mystery Oil is interesting stuff. It seems to be very much like 3 IN 1, but thinned out with little bit of kerosene-like solvent. Folks seem to swear by the stuff for all kinds of applications. Once again, I think a lot of it is folklore, something that seems to surround common lubricants and solvents in a variety of fields.

# in One was what my Cuban grandfather used on ALL his steel tools as a 'Master ' carpenter in Cuba, And short time here. Cannot go wrong! Man born in 1896! 3 in 1 oil!!!!

Wd40 is great for cleaning blades and preventing rust, but not as a lubricant. 3 in 1 has a horrible smell that won't go away, so I avoid using it at all costs, especially for something that I will be handling and it'll be in my pocket. I don't need to walk around smelling like a workshop. There are plenty of good, cheap, lubricants for pivot usage, my favorite being daiwa reel oil, works wonders and has a needle tip applicator so you get it where it needs to go, using minimal amounts of oil.

Absolutely Correct!!

Probably dont need to ressurect a 9 year old thread if this is the contribution to it. Not that your opinion isnt valid. Just that there are many current threads you can contribute to and with more substance.

I use Quick Release, developed by the Latama (italian auto) knife guy.

All I have to do is smell 3-in-1 oil and I'm taken back to my youth. I can't begin to count how many hours I spent rubbing that stuff into baseball mitts to soften them up, and slathering it all over my various knives. Great stuff.

^^^^^ +10, a great throw back to my youth in my dad's shop as well. Give me that a can of Blaster and I can make anything move and not rust
