3 winners by Bura for 4/16/3 -- Pix and good deals.

Thanks Pen.

Those pix work in-line on BF thread.

This should now paste back as a valid link:

From my last paste-in, it looks like the spaces are a problem. Sure are for anything following a UNIX convention, as the internet used to. Does MS stuff use "special spaces" in file names? "Different" spaces than Macs?

Can't conclude anything about the long file names at this point, but I bet that would be a problem too.

Bill, Can you use the underscore "_" instead of spaces? And keep to 32 characters or less (inluding "." and "_") names?

It is a "good" thing I'm broke didn't try to catch the deals today. -- I'd be bummed if I missed a chance at the movie model. Rog would probably have aced me anyway. :)

Wow, that yellow is... distinctive. I know what khuk I'd want if I needed to wear one with my orange traffic safety vest :D

Also the perfect car-khuk for someone with a yellow SUV!

firkin - The underscore is nearly as much a pain in the neck as the space. Doesn't cause technical problems, just lotsa user errors.

Best bet = use dashes and lowercase for everything. That's the most internet friendly and has been since HTML 1.0 came out in the early nineties.

Earlier Macs didn't know how to interpret the %20 and some pre-Win9x didn't either.

Unix is a whole nuther story I don't want to even get involved in. :barf:

Wow, I really like that yellow scabbard. Monies are short right now. Just as well, because how would I accessorize to match?

Fair enough. It's worth remembering that space still means "end of character string" to a lot of systems, though. EVERTHING isn't from MS, though some might wish it so.

That works:) Puting special characters in file names can be asking for big trouble.

"Earlier Macs didn't know how to interpret the %20 and some pre-Win9x didn't either."

Mine sure doesn't. That means "space in file name"?
Is this HTML or a "feature" from Redmond? (To be fair, never thought it necessary for Macs to support spaces in file names either)

"Unix is a whole nuther story I don't want to even get involved in."

ROTFLMAO.

It's the only OS/shell combo that I found that made sense under the hood. Everthing visible. Amazing scripting power. Complete. No need to buy a bunch of little additional programs to defrag, backup or whatever. Arcane and hard to learn, but so flexible. One command line can do the job of many-line MS or Mac scripts. Made for people who hate typing. But lots of special characters have meaning to the shell, and can't be used in file names.

> >> < << | & ; * ? [ ] ( ) " ' ` \ $ # = ! $- ~-

The above in a file name are all a VERY bad idea.
They are UNIX shell commands and the attempt will usually be made to execute them.

Even if HTML buffers these in a browser, if someone downloads a file with such a name to a UNIX system, it usually can't be used and it can be hell to delete it.

I wonder if the new Macs with a Unix kernel can run the Unix shells, and how they handle this problem. Hopefully I can afford a new box sometime soon.

Wow, I really like that yellow scabbard.... how would I accessorize to match?

Accessorizing is the easy part:

A yellow oilcloth rain-slicker and matching S'wester hat.

The hard part is wearing the outfit when it's not raining and hot outside.

If Ronald McDonald needed a matching khuk... Of course he'd also need one of those bright red ones to really match.;)

Seems nobody likes the yellow scabbard. Take it for $75 and save enough to get a custom scabbard made by Terry Sisco.

We'll see if anybody is still reading this thread.

I'm going to shorten the file names and the yellow scabbard went without a closeup of the handle.

All gone.

Uncle - I still would have liked to see a pic. The problem is that for most of us - we readily understand "wood" and "horn" - even newbies get those straight - but "white metal" sends us into a quandry as to what it really is. Without a closeup pic, we hesitate.

Plus, if we had had one, you could always say "check that closeup we did on __/__/__ to see the mysterious white metal".

Rant over.

All said, I'm glad it found a good home.

Dan

Pen, Uncle may correct me, but for handles, I immediately thought aluminum.

Were it decoratively worked like the brass handles, then I may have thought of nickle-silver.

Please clarify, Bill.

Agreed. I bet they don't have any CNC facilities, so it is a cast handle? Even an ugly aluminum handle might be the perfect (absolutely no maintenance) handle for the car-kit khukuri that I've been hoping my as-yet-unpurchased 12" AK would be.

I saw a kagas katne at the convention that had a "white metal" handle. It looked like brushed cast aluminum that is popular for bathroom knicknacks and whatnot. However, a k.k. wasn't really big enough to get a good feel for the density.

lcs ended up with another white metal-handle a few months ago. Maybe he can tell us if it's light enough to be aluminum, or heavy enough for nickel-silver.
