$30 Folders Which One?

For my money, I can't think of any way that either the Tenacious or the Rat-1 measured up to the Cyclone

Personally I like one handed opening knives to hand an opening method that doesn't cut my thumb. It's also nice when the thumb ramp is properly design so that my thumb doesn't rest exactly on the corner of it. I like my hands better than to use a knife like that.

But if those two parts work for you I could see how you'd like it. Solid lock and the steel performs well.

May I suggest you take a look at the benchmade VEX or mini grip, I picked one up a VEX for 25 bucks, they are discontinued but still can be found and will most likely can find them now on clearance with some dealers.. The mini grip is a great blade with the AXIS lock, I just saw one go for 30 bucks the other day on the bay... I have put my VEX through some serious abuse and still comes back asking for more..

Any of these will do:
Byrd Cara Cara
Spyderco Tenacious
Kershaw Skyline
Ontario RAT-1
Timberline Workhorse
Benchmade Vex
Benchmade Pika II
Buck Vantage-Avid
Ka-Bar Dozier Folding Hunter
Blade Tech Ganyana Lite

I got my mini cyclone which isn't that "mini" for 26 or 27 bucks online. The vex is also a good choice for that price range. Byrd knives are good too but you said you don't like them. The tenacious, rat1 and the kabar dozier I have heard are all good knives for the money but I have no experience with them.

Another vote for the Tenacious or the Rat-1. I just got the Rat and can't believe the quality for $25. I generally like Kershaws, and have owned 2 Cyclones, and the speedsafe on/off has quit working on both of them, other than that it is a great knife.

Either a Spyderco Persistence (smaller version of the Tenacious and a few bucks cheaper) or a K-Bar Dozier Folding Hunter (probably one of the best under $20 folders on the market). Also, the Spyderco Byrd line has a few good models as well - check out the Cara Cara with G-10 handles.

The Kershaw Skyline is a great choice, and the Buck Vantage is also another great choice for your price range.

Check with the guy on the forums selling the Kershaw blems.. I got a nice piece from him for around that price, that got to my door in 3 days..

Please PM me if you can find (1) Kershaw Cylone Plain Edge Satin finish for that price I can't and seriously doubt if one can be found unles it's closer $50.

PM sent (complete with a link). They can be found even cheaper elsewhere on the fleabay.

Ouch! Cutting your thumb? I wouldn't like that in a knife either  We must have drastically different shaped hands if yours was so uncomfortable when mine isn't. To each his own, I spoze :D

Thanks again!

I have the Spyderco Persistence and I did send a forum email to KershawGuy about three offerings that I would like to have.

I'm going to check out the KA-BAR Dozier Folding Hunter right now! :D

big thumbs up for the dozier folders. but for the same money the RAT-1 is a better deal. Much better grind for slicing and carving and steel liners with open back for cleaning. If you can get a rat-1 for 30$ you are getting twice what you paid.

Some have reported similar things on those particular thumbstuds while the majority of people seem to have no problem with them, like you. Who knows. I'm just glad we live in a time when there are so many manufacturers putting out quality. Bucks, Kershaws, Benchmades etc. I never buy or carry, but they do put out a great product for those that like the way they do things.

That being said I think my thumbs are abnormally big or something. There are many folders that get great reviews here that I can't use to cut a cardboard box without instantly getting a cramped thumb.

You said it!

To talk to my Dad about knives, you'd think that Buck and Victorinox were the only decent quality knives made when he was growing up . It's a good time to be a knife addict :p

DOUK-DOUK! Best cutter out there. Tenacious, Rat-1, Mercator, Opinel, lots of real good blades out there in the cheap zone. Investigate thoroughly anything from China but low end French and Taiwanese blades are amazing.:thumbup:
