My brother and I are exchanging Christmas gifts. He made me promise to spend only around $30. I would like some recomendations for something around that price that would be a decent knife. Folder or fixed would be fine.

He already has a CRK&T stiff kiss or I would get him one of those.

I have been considering a K-bar to carry in his patrol car. I am open to suggestions.

I second that- for something a little off of the beaten "Tactical" path:
Perhaps an Okapi (same web site) & an Opinel as well- you can get both for $30.00.
Or a Douk Douk from bladeart.com ($20.00)
Good Luck-

Or a Newt Livesay, or a Camillus Cuda Arc-lite, or jump up over to 1SKS and look at the gift selections there. Amazing amounts of stuff for that 30 bucks, my friend. Keep clicking!

Sometimes I catch myself assuming that everybody knows their way around a pocket knife. Then I remember what the first three letters of "assume" are.

Aren't Buck 110 folders still in the $30+ range?

Go to EBay and look up the CRKT LUS-11 or 12 (Lightfoot Urban Sharks), they are good knives well within your price range.

how about a good hatchet with sheath?

I think a hatchet would be a useful thing to carry in the trunk. I carry one in my vehicle.

The Gerber EZOut is underrated and
goes for around $30. Seems very
well built. When I really want to
torq on something with a sharp blade,
I use my EZOut because the handle is
nice and firm for a small folder.

I love all of my Cold Steel products, and would highly rek'mnd ANY of them. More specifically, I LOVE my BUSHMAN. You could get two for that price!

Browning 708 knife. Fair steel (8a) nice size and tight as a drumhead. For the money very good!

How about a USMC fighting utility? You can get a Ka-Bar, Camillus, or an Ontario for right at $30, plus $5 or so for shipping. Regards, Clayton Hufford

Well, I made my decision. I will be getting him a CRK&T. They seem to offer a lot of bang for the buck.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Good choice Dennis.

I was going to add in my opinion and recommend CRKT.

I have the Mirage and I just ordered the Urban Shark for my wife's Godfather for Xmas.

If the Shark is anything like the Mirage, we will both be happy.

CRKT offers a great knife.........especially when you consider the price.

The CRMirage really is a great deal. I use one every day. It sits on my computer in my office and is my letter opener and handy utility blade and something to fend off aggressive students.

I can't figure out why a cop would need a Kabar in his car ???

More useful would probably be something that goes with him evrywhere - clipped to his pocket or on his duty belt.

My suggestions:

CRKT POintGuard, KFF, Mirage
Spyderco Delica, Endura
Outdoor edge Field lites
Gerber EZ out as a beater
How about the new aluminum handled Gerber - 3.00 I think it's called. Stud, clip, AUS6 steel.
