A Gransfors Bruk small forest axe and a midsize fixed blade like the Fallkniven F1 would be good choices for “around” the home use and both can be had for around $300.

True, but you can do that without insulting. Well, maybe you can't but others around here can.So now it dawns that OP's query is bottomless , impossibly wide and deep ? And you enabled this lazy and disrespectful behavior . You have surely helped the boy prepare for the real world . He"ll go far with his " I need something , FEED ME " communication skills . He couldn't even be bothered to spell "Leatherman" correctly . I had to guess what a "weatherman " knife could be . At some point coddling becomes abuse , when self-discipline and responsibility is what's desperately needed to be taught . End sermon .

You'll need to give us more information if you want a more meaningful recommendation. Otherwise the recs will be all over the place. This is for home. I went with a weatherman on that last thread
I really like this idea. The small forest axe is a well made, versatile, life time tool. I'd choose a different knife but that is a personal preference. Something like an esea 3, 4, or 6. Whatever your size preference.A Gransfors Bruk small forest axe and a midsize fixed blade like the Fallkniven F1 would be good choices for “around” the home use and both can be had for around $300.

If it is to be a folder, a used crk is a great option. That or something from spyderco. So many options in basically whatever configuration you want.Maybe a used sebenza? Simple, well built knife.
