I was recently surfing the bay for fun and noticed a slightly higher-than-normal priced Mtech at ~$40 under the a new brand division of "Mtech Evolution," featuring slightly better materials (8Cr13 vs. 440a) and a bearing pivot (still overpriced). Intrigued, I decided to visit the Master Cutlery website just to see what other products this new division offered. Looks like they are trying to revamp their image across the product lines, with not just "Mtech Evolution," but Tac-Force Evolution and Elk Ridge Evolution as well. Imagine my surprise when I saw in their catalogue $150 and $300 items which, according to the product descriptions, are supposed to be titanium framelocks and D2 and S35vn blade steels. I am somewhat in disbelief right now. I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to handle these new premium offerings? And does this even seem like a sound strategy for Master Cutlery? Will anyone actually give these a chance? Maybe they should have just come up with a new brand name altogether if they wanted to give this a shot?

A new name sure wouldn't have hurt! ;)

Yeah that's pretty much what I was thinking. While not impossible, it's going to be really hard to disassociate the name from the image they've cultivated throughout the years.

I hate to say it, but this actually looks pretty nice. If it wasn't $300 I would be tempted to try it...

That looks very familiar for some reason. Maybe it's just my general mistrust of Mtech and the popularity of kwaiken type designs right now, but...

I am honestly intrigued. These look like they can be decently high end china made knives. I imagine the street prices of these wont be as high as they are listed on their site. Hey look at those ZT 0470 and 0393 clones.

Another fine offering from your favorite anonymous Chinese knifewerks.

At first I figured that the OP mistook Microtech for MTech.

Crud. I actually like the way that looks. Ain't gonna buy it though. Not from MTech. It could be the best knife ever made and I'll never buy it from that company.

Ok quotes arent working too well on my phone, I was supposed to have the pic of the mtech posted above. So this is a reply to that picture a few posts above mine.

That looks like a Boker Urban Trapper they come in vg10, I can't remember if they came in anything else. I held one at a knife store and it felt like it was good quality and worth what they were asking for (sub $100).

This is of course the Boker I'm talking about, I wouldn't buy the mtech at such a price as I just don't trust them. They really should have chose a new name the same buyer of mtechs won't be looking at pricier knives. And those customers generally don't want to touch mtechs.

I sure hope you're not the only witness to my murder(I also hope I'm not murdered). That has only the same general proportions as an urban trapper. Otherwise they're almost completely dissimilar.

Hyundai managed to dig themselves out of the bargain bin. Maybe it'll work for MTech too. I'm not a buyer though.

It looks like Grindwirx (BladeHQ) already carries some of the lower end MTech Evolution items. I wonder how they are to the Kershaws that also use 8Cr13 steels.

One of the Mtech Evolution knives is on that river site that shall not be named for about 40% of MSRP, so if the higher end stuff follows formula you'll see the titanium and S35VN models running for around $130. Still a little high for being Mtech, but not unreasonable.

This line won't do anything at the higher prices (even discounted). United, S and W, Schrade, Frost, etc.... have all tried to have high end knives mixed in their regular lines, and it doesn't work. Once a name gets tied to cheap products, it's very hard to reverse it. Also why put your premium line next to $15 knives in the same line? Even if you didn't know anything about them, it gives off subliminal cheap feelings.

As mentioned, these needed a name change, and a web page far away from an ties to the M-Tech name.
