.300 win. mag.

I have never really understood the need for a 300 win mag for hunting in North America but if I was going for a rifle that was that powerful it would most likely be on a brown bear hunt in which case I would most definitely want a controlled feed action with a huge extractor not a push feed like a Remington or a Savage so my choice would be either a Ruger or a Kimber. Or if I feel like dreaming a full blown custom done on a pre 64 model 70 action.

Patrick, range/conditions is a big factor not just the size of the game. In New Zealand for example the 7mm and .30 wonder rounds are popular for critters like Chamoi and Bull Thar, neither take a great deal of killing but the shots may well be from peak to peak in the alps.

Very relevant point this ... the ballistics of the round and the distance you want to shoot at ... even if it is just for a "challenge" ... can mean you select a round more potent than the size of the quarry would dictate

I like fast 7mm's for their wind beating capability and have used them in the hills of Scotland for culling because they improve the ability to "kneck" the Deer when the wind is fishtailing ...

Oh I can easily see the point of one given long shots. I guess I just have enough confidence in my abilites with a hand loaded .270 to take anything I will be shooting at. I think personal confidence in a round is also a very important aspect of hunting big game.

I have this guy- Model 70 .300 win mag Rock Mountain Elk Commemorative Edition. The stock is some of the best walnut Ive ever seen.

That is a nice one. The Super Grades usually have good wood on them...

I'm a little different than most. I never got attached to the 300 Win Mag. For most practical purposes, it doesn't offer that much more than a 30-06, at least until you get out around 300+ yards.
If I'm gonna burn more powder, and carry a longer barrel, I want a bigger bullet comin out of it :D

I have hunted all over he world from Asia to Afica and all over North America and n many of those trips carried various us toms chambered. In 300 Win but mostly 300 WBY

Always shooting a hand loaded Barnes X variant and have had tremendous success. IMHO you really can't go wrong with one of he 300 Mags as long as you use good bullets

Here is one built on a skelotinized 700 action

Great pictures JP... Thats a sweet looking Rem. Who did the action and barrel ?

Hi Mike happy new year :)

One of them was made by Mark Bansner the other with the very skelotinized action was done by Lester Knipe who is a very good friend and made me that rifle to go to Tajikistan

Both of these rifles have I believe MPI stocks ,26 inch Leija Barrels and even with the heavy Swarovski glass weight in at around 7 1/4 t 7 1/2 pounds. They both have no floor plates etc. to get to that weight

Thx

Thanks Joe. Happy New Year to you as well. They are nice, and a perfect weight for packing. Mark has been doing it for quite a while, and has a good reputation

Wow Andy, that is a very crazy and gruesome story!! Glad you are well equipped!

E
.... that story only tells the bare minimum.... I, sadly, know way to much about the whole mess (among other things an acquaintance of mine was one of the first responders, she was more than handy with a blade.... :(

I always felt it was appropriate to buy the same brand as the round, so in the case of the .300 Winchester Magnum, I'd want a Winchester rifle to shoot it out of!

I have a Model 70 in .300 WinMag that I initially disliked due to its so-so accuracy with factory ammo (and I tried LOTS of brands/loads as I bought it just before a hunt and didn't have time to work up any handloads). After the hunt, when I got the time to start working up some hand loads for it, I found a couple loads that shoot as good as I could hope for. Now the rifle is a favorite. I've killed one moose and a couple of caribou with it, as well as a few whitetails.

Stay sharp,
desmobob

I have been using this 700 LSS 300 Ultra Mag for a few years and it shoots like a dream but it is not a gun you take to the range for fun , The fun turns into pain after about 15 rounds unless you wear a sissy bag.

My all time favorite guns are my mausers.. The carabine is a Radom variant from 1933 with clip feed and still shoots great , The M98 is a 7.62 that my grandfather had redone into 30.06 and it shoots like new to this day, My grandfather shot moose with it for 20 years before it war given to me ..
