.38 Special!!

Anyone notice the two different blade etch's on the Indian paint brush 38's? One is like the ones posted here and the other is just "Northfield".

It was mentioned awhile back in one of these threads. I mentioned that I think the Northfield only etch is only used on satin blades but I'm not 100% sure about that.

Got my Stag today and I'm SUPER happy with this example. I can't decide which side I like better. Something I didn't consider is the stag handles thicken the 38 nicely so I'm going to try carrying this for a week after I give it a sharpen.

It seems that's the case, as there is both a satin blade and polished blade Northfield.

Also, it seems that some more Beaver shield Specials have popped up. That's pretty cool, I really like that one.

I received my abalone 38 Special last week, thought I would show some pics. I like the knife, but don't love it. I think its just fine as a gentleman's Sunday knife, or an office knife, however these days I am drawn more to hard use knives with solid pulls and made with thicker materials. Still, even with some flaws in the abalone, its a nice looking knife.

My sentiments exactly. Great looking knife just the same. Dollars to donuts though, someday I will probably end up with one:rolleyes:

I just ordered the satin blade Indian Paintbrush Jigged Bone, mainly to spend my CK coupon. I had been wrestling with it anyway though, I really like this model.

Thanks, it was a lucky find for sure. The mark side is different but also attractive & complex.

I ordered a 38 Special with Tractor Green Jigged Bone from gunstockjack yesterday. Looking forward to receiving it. I like the Turkish Clip combined with the Serpentine frame.

GuestWho101 GuestWho101 , where did you get that knife??
I understood beavers were on wood-handled knives, or OKCA SFOs.
Also, despite being a pretty knife, the Beaver is upside down!!

I can’t remember which thread it was in, but someone was commenting on how the beaver shields on other knives were upside down. Perhaps they all are?

Ahh... found it.
I got my first Beaver Tail in today and I noticed something. The shield is upside down, or rather the opposite direction of other shields.
Just an interesting observation I thought I would share.

@black mamba Jeff, I started one because my photos always looked upside down. I think the consensus was that originally knives were displayed sitting on their back springs.

I somehow overlooked this slim and graceful looking GEC! I've not been on the forum much in recent months, but have faithfully enjoyed my traditionals nonetheless. No particular reason, just been busy with various things so not online as much lately. I check on the site now and then, so today I saw this thread and took note of the #38 with it's graceful California Clip... It was like an epiphany - WOW!

I quickly found one on Mike Latham's site and it's been ordered - jigged bone in Indian Paintbrush Red. I love the Calif Clip and I've always enjoyed the slim profile of a single blade. This knife checks all the boxes: Polished blade w/Northfield UN-X-LD etch? Pinched/lined bolsters? Brass liners? UN-X-LD badge? Jigged bone?... YES, YES, YES, YES, YES!

Now for the agonizing wait for it's arrival :D

Okay, I'll bite. (Pun intended)

Why is the beaver considered to be upside down?

It looks fine to me - when the knife is held in a normal usage orientation, the beaver's teeth are point at what is being cut.

If the beaver was flipped so that it was feet down when the knife is on its spine, then the the beaver's teeth would point away from what was being cut.

Three great 38's. I've had the stag for a while, the two jigged bones are recent additions.
There is a real difference in the actions of each. The stag Northfield has VERY strong W&T, the Tractor Green Tidioute is on the complete opposite end of the spectrum (especially on the close, it almost needs help to fully seat) and the "Beaver" is right in the middle.
