Hey there , recently i was wondering if a custom
Wave mod add on could be printed ?
Just thought id share my thoughts .
Maybe it would connect through the spydie hole like a
Button snap ?
Or connect above the spine with an interlocking " zip lock" type
Connection ?
I was thinking the finished part could flare out either side to provide
Nice thubstud effect . possibly with some texture. And hopefully wave nice ?
Just thought it might make a interesting discussion ?
Also if anyone has a printer and would like to try making one .
I could try designing one with cad ?

i thought about adding a curve , it might well need it , but noticed how a cable tie protrudes sideways and catches quite well .
i recently watched a review of a cold steel (something ...sorry ) and the guy mentions how well the square
disc style thumbstud works and how its mostly done by the sides .?

Either the spartan, ak-47, or espada. While those do work well in my experience, nothing waves like an emerson

I have access to a printer but I'm not seeing from your drawing how the "zip lock" would work. If you can design it in a CAD program I can have it printed.

Also please leave the spyderco logo off, I know its cool, and if it was a private owned printer I'd be cool with it, but its not my printer, I just have access, so I'd rather it not have another companies TM.

Hey sure sounds great , really just thought this up . Very much a concept stage.
Didnt really figure out the ziplock aspect , i thought some type of barb ? Maybe a mushroom
Shaped peg and a hole ? Not sure what would work best really .

I think the ideal option would be a hybrid of the spyderco Cobra hood, with an extra protrusion forming the wave hook:

It would then be either hot glued or epoxied directly onto the thumb ramp.

Just made another quick sketch , maybe it would lock together
With a mushroom peg in to a hole ?

Looks very Effective, How robust will the plastic be with regular use?

I have no personal experience with 3D printer plastic, honest question.

I am sure though, a similar design CNCd out of Aluminum with a screw fastener would be plenty strong.

i think a decent printer can do stuff with pretty strong abs type plastic , im guessing strong enough .
i was thinking it could flex open pass through the hole and push snap together on the top .
CNCd aluminum would be sweet with a little torx screw .
or Titanium !! lol

The ABS plastic is very strong, people are printing AR and pistol lower receivers. The printer I have access to is used for industrial mock-up and the parts are (semi) load bearing.

It'll hold up to this, I like the mushroom button idea, with a little dab of epoxy it'd be very strong. I have also used a 12" printed adjustible wrench (that was printed fully assembled, worm gear and all!)

OP-If/when your welling to CAD it get in touch with me and I'll print a couple up. Looks like your designing it for a tenacious? I guess I'll have to pick me one up too lol.

sounds like ill have to get this going in 3d ! ,
i used the tenacious as a standard knife with a hole ( used a waved one at work for a few years , just awesome ) .
id like the design to work on many different knives . im going with the half a hole form as some knives have a small section of hole hidden when closed .
if it could press fit together im hopeful it wouldn't req any adhesive ?
thanks for all the input guys ! wasnt sure at first if this was something people would go for , now im amped to make it happen !

I think I recall seeing something like this made out of kydex or a similar material. I'll search and post back.

Could have sworn it was on one of the craftsmen's home pages but I couldn't find anything.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product though.

At the part that rests inside of the hole, that your thumb would hit if you intended to open it by hand, i would put a shelf, or stepping, or just more of an edge vs smooth so you can open it better.

your drawings are very useful, However I wouldn't think you would need such a large hook shape, rather just a straight edge closer to the spine at an acute angle would catch really well, or maybe keep the hook but shirk it ever so slightly.... just some thoughts.

I think your right pete , i might scale back the hook a bit .
A bit more edge inside the hole might be a good idea also .

Not to rain on the 3d idea i think thats awesome but you could likely make something like that out of keydex

Good stuff! I'll be keeping my eyes on this thread. Keep posting your progress.

kydex is nice stuff for sure , im really after the width that 3d would allow .
i like the idea that it would protrude either side of the hole and act as a thumbstud ..
before i get in to hot water here i should say i really like the spydie hole !
i guess im trying to mix all three hole wave and stud .
