I fixed up an old 2HP motor for my new grinder, and then I found out I really wanted TEFC or TENV. I found a great deal on a newish Mitsubishi motor, but when it arrived, the Postal Service had punished the seller for sending it in a flat rate box. They dropped it, crushing the fan shroud and breaking a foot off.

I can use it, but I got a full refund, and I don't really want to look at that tragic, busted motor every time I turn the grinder on. I am looking for another motor.

The selection of enclosed 2HP motors is not that great, so I decided to check into 3HP as well. There are some deals out there. The 2HP motor I have now seems to be very hard to bog down, but then it's a real 2HP motor not made in China.

Obvious question: is 3HP overkill for a 2x72 grinder? It will probably be heavier and more of a pain to move.

Also wondering if I could get away with cutting a circle out of some AC filter material and putting it over the suck side of my existing motor.

One can never have too many women, or to much horsepower. Please don't tell my wife I said that.

I'm calling her now.

Actually, I have known times when the woman I had was one woman too much.

I found a Dayton motor for a good price, and I don't see "Taiwan" or "China" on the nameplate. I may jump in and see what happens.

Just make sure the mounting is correct for your application, or pretty soon you'll need to open a second hand motor store.

I hate having to check all the niggly details. One nice thing: it's a 184T, so it should fit the platform I made for a 184. Have to bore out the drive wheel, though.

If you want to run the newer ceramic belts, 3 hp is just about right. My KMG running a 3hp pulley system, 2-3-4 Inch powering a 6 inch drive wheel. This results in 5400 sfm which again is just about right. You can't stall a set up like this which makes grinding a lot more enjoyable.

It's a good idea to buy 56c face mount motors that also have a pedestal. Flexibility for the future!

I just need more POWER!!!

Seriously though, it never bogs down or even thinks about slowing down. I do usually need to start it first, and THEN start my vacuum...

I agree, it's a real pain to work in a shop without enough main power feed. Been there. When we built a new shop in 09 making sure there was adequate power to run the many machines.
I started out with a 1 hp machine and kept increasing the hp as my grinding style became more aggressive. I run the 3m 984f belts in 36-60 to grind bevels. They are designed to use at high belt speeds 5400 sfm with as much pressure as can be exerted. This is why I run the 3 hp motors.
I've got my eye on a 10 hp gas engine setting out back :)

Good luck on getting the power issues worked out, Fred

Thanks, I have run a conduit for additional circuits I just need to crawl under the decrepit crawl space under my house to run the wire

184 frame has the same motor face bolt pattern.

It seems' he's ok with the larger shaft.

All good, I agree, but there are other factors involved, and that's why I mentioned 56c. It's dimensions are almost ubiquitous in machinery in our realm, and as long as he understands going into it that the 184T frame he's acquiring will face mount, but that just the height of the motor is almost 2" dimensionally taller, his options may change. Keeping options open, as I pointed out.

I recall that one maker rigged his KMG with a 5 hp motor.
